New work: Rutger Hauer has a smashing time with John Midgley

You know Rutger Hauer, right? He has starred in loads of movies, including cult faves Blade Runner and Ladyhawke, as well as a new film that sounds destined to become an underground classic: Hobo With a Shotgun. John Midgley recently photographed the actor for the May issue of Men’s Journal, for photo editor Debbie Samuelson. The concept involved Rutger’s smashing (fake) glass on his head, an idea he wasn’t entirely into at first. Here, John talks about how he got the shots:

“It was very funny,” recalls John. “Upon entering the studio, Rutger was nervous at the idea of breaking fake glass on his head. So we started off with simple headshots and three-quarter shots, in daylight and strobe, with atmosphere, etc. At the end of the shoot, we showed him, with an assisstant of mine, how painless the fake glass was and how beautifull it would look being smahed over his head. He was still skeptical.

“The studio went dead quiet as Rutger pondered His staff were shuffling their feet and looking at their watches. Rutger walked around a bit, then suddenly went over to the table where the bottles were lined up, picked one up,  and smashed it over his head and started laughing aloud. Everyone looked at each other in shock and also started laughing. With glee in his eyes, Rutger started smashing the bottles over his head with abandon. In fact, he started making suggestions for how it might look better!

“He left in high spirits after seeing the image on screen. I love that crazy old man…”
