This week, theprintspace in London will open an exhibition of 100 photos by Jason Hindley that he took during various trips to Japan over the past 13 years. Proceeds from print sales from the show, titled “Familiar and Distant,” will benefit the British Red Cross Japan Tsunami Appeal. (In fact, the Japan Society of the U.K. is helping to promote the show at its website.)

This fund-raising effort is of personal interest to Jason, whose wife (and studio manager/business partner), Keiko Hindley, hails from Japan. Like Keiko herself, the country has been an enduring source of inspiration to him.

“Familiar and Distant,” which opens May 20, will be on view at theprintspace through June 3, at which point Jason and Keiko would like to bring it to the States. I’m using this space to issue a direct appeal to galleries or other venues to host this show and help raise money for the relief effort in Japan.

Please write me at kristina [at] stocklandmartel.com or Keiko at keiko [at] jasonhindley.com if you’re interested.

Meanwhile, here’s a preview of “Familiar and Distant”…

From the press release:

“Familiar and Distant” blurs the boundaries between carefully framed still-life photography and snapshots of fleeting moments of the mundane. Hindley’s images reflect what could be described as unnoticeable fragments of everyday life, a theme that reappears in Hindley’s work time and again. Seemingly familiar views of backstreets, public spaces, and people going about their day reveal subtle details in an intimate and yet reserved manner, conveying a unique sense of everyday Japan.

“I draw from the familiarity and accessibility I sense as a repeated visitor to Japan,” explains Hindley. “This, juxtaposed with a feeling of resigned distance inherent in being a ‘foreigner’, fuels my impulse to capture what I observe.”
