Melanie Acevedo chooses her favorite week from “52 Weeks,” her personal project inspired by her kids

As Melanie Acevedo prepares for her third year of “52 Weeks,” a personal photo project about her kids that—as the title indicates—was not meant to be ongoing, we thought it was a good time to ask her to look back.

Which of all the many weeks of photographing her daughter, Violet, and son, Rockwell, has been most meaningful to her?

Week 35, she says.

“This was one of those special summer days. It even felt like childhood for me too,” says Melanie, who is based just outside of Manhattan in Sea Cliff, New York. “The kids are so free here in Sea Cliff. You can see it in their bodies, especially the photo of Violet playing at sunset on the beach. We had had a dinner with some friends on the beach, and all the kids were running around playing, and she was just literally jumping for joy!”

When I look at this photo of Rockwell, I can almost taste the salt in the air, remember eating ice cream with him that afternoon outside on the lawn. I took this picture of him from my office window. I looked out for a minute, and he was just wandering around outside, kind of talking to himself, so absorbed in his thoughts. He didn’t know anyone was looking at him.”
