Melanie Acevedo photographs Simon Doonan and Jonathan Adler at their Shelter Island getaway for Vanity Fair

When they want to take a break from their fabulous life in Manhattan, author and bon mots master Simon Doonan and his husband, designer Jonathan Adler, get away to their fabulous home in Shelter Island, with dog Liberace and Simon’s Prada swim trunks in tow. I know these and other intimate details because Vanity Fair featured the couple in a recent “Where I Go” story that Melanie Acevedo had the pleasure of photographing. The Q&A with Simon covers everything from where he likes to paint the town red (“I am barely capable of painting the town beige”) to how he keeps his girlish figure. “We have lots of lesbian hikes in the Mashomak nature preserve,” he tells Vanity Fair. “I just wrote a book called Gay Men Don’t Get Fat, so I am obligated to stay in shape. We also love kayaking and paddle-boarding (not to be confused with water-boarding.) I also like to jog. Just call me Sporty Spice.”

Go here to enjoy more of Simon’s wit and to see Melanie’s photos, which capture the couple’s effortless stylishness, not to mention Liberace’s incredible cuteness…
