Variety recently interviewed celebrity and entertainment photographer Michael Muller, who the magazine calls Marvel Entertainment‘s “go-to-photographer to shoot the best angles of its superheroes” because he has shot so many Marvel movie posters—from Spider-Man 3 and X-Men Origins Wolverine to all of the Iron Man films, including the upcoming Iron Man 3.

The article touches on Michael’s longtime friendship with Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr., his first experiences shooting movie posters (“I knew nothing of the formula,” Michael tells Variety. “I wanted to do what I do and collaborate with actors”), and his approach to shooting posters for blockbuster films, where the stakes are extraordinarily high.

“…Instead of posing actors in generic poses and stringing together shots for a final image, Muller prefers to shoot posters in camera, directing scenes on set where actors tend to feel more comfortable and are already in costume,” says Variety, which also notes Michael’s reputation for being swift.

“If you can shoot fast and make (actors) look good they love it,” says Michael.
