Michael Muller’s “Sharks” is this year’s most adrenaline-packed photo book

Celebrity and entertainment photographer Michael Muller is one of those people who decide they want to do something and actually go and do it—even if that something seems crazy, impossible, and maybe even life-threatening. And his new book, Sharks, is the latest example of that passion and perseverance.

An ardent conservationist, Michael began photographing sharks in between commercial assignments, traveling all over the world to set up underwater photo shoots whose focus was perhaps the oceans’ most misunderstood creature. He developed a patented seven-bulb, 1200-watt plexi-encased strobe lighting rig, featuring NASA engineering. And because he knows you have to get close to get the shot, he chose not to shoot from inside a cage.

The resulting photos—dramatic, awe-inspiring, and at times intimidating—quickly gained an audience. Michael collaborated on a clothing line with Billabong and exhibitions with the artist Sage Vaughn. His images were used to promote Discovery Channel’s “Shark Week” (naturally), and he and his crew were the subject of a show called Shark Shoot on the Travel Channel.

And now, with Sharks, Michael has realized a longtime dream. Taschen, the publisher of the massive monograph, rightly describes the book as a catalog of adrenaline and awe, and there has been glowing coverage both here and abroad, including features in Outside, Man of the World, Conde Nast Traveler, Flaunt, The Washington Post, and Maxim.
