He learnt horseback riding while he was on his family’s farm. He continues the riding. Alvarez is the youngest of 8 siblings. Seven out of them are boys, and all of them have become professional boxers. 

Alvarez has the nickname Canelo, which refers to the masculine word cinnamon in Spanish. It is a common nickname for those who have red hair. Canelo Alvarez Fight Record has also made his nickname more popular.
