The Three Shadows Photography Art Centre in Beijing is currently hosting “Coal + Ice,” an exhibition that “seeks to do something unprecedented: to chart the horrific grandeur of our effects on the planet, from the coal mines beneath our feet to the dwindling glaciers on our highest mountains,” to quote Evan Osnos of The New Yorker‘s Photo Booth blog. The show, curated by Jeroen de Vries and Susan Meiselas, features work by 30 photographers, including Nadav Kander, and is on view through November 28. In an arrangement reminiscent of talent-seeking reality shows like American Idol, sharply dressed men and women went to Joyce’s Lee Gardens location to have their snapshots taken. “These images were then uploaded to JOYCE.com, where fans could vote for their top 30 favourites, ranging from students and musicians to actors and writers,” explains the news page at JOYCE.com. The winners returned to Lee Gardens, where they were attired in the latest fashions and had their portraits taken by Erik Madigan Heck.

Tim Mantoani has just published a book of his 20×24 Polaroid portraits of well-known photographers titled Behind Photographs, and he’s hosting a book-release party from 7 to 9 p.m. this Thursday, October 27, at Ogilvy& Mather’s New York City headquarters, 636 11th Ave, 1st Fl, between 46th and 47th streets. Behind Photographs features 158 photographers—Mary Ellen Mark, Jim Marshall, Harry Benson, Elliott Erwitt, and many more—and is as such a historic document. As Tim points out at his Kickstarter page, “Some of these photographers not only documented their generation but, their photographs have defined it.” Among the big names in his book are Stockland Martel’s Lauren Greenfield, Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, Walter Iooss, Vincent Laforet, Roxanne Lowit, Doug Menuez, and Art Streiber, so I got in touch with Tim to ask how those images came together.

“I photographed Art, Lauren, Doug, and Vincent at Jacob Javits during the Photo Expo,” he explained. “I took the 20×24 there a couple years to shoot while photographers were at the show. Art is a class act. I first met him at an assistant’s wedding in Santa Barbara. Walter, Roxanne, and Timothy were all shot at the old 20×24 Polaroid studio on Broadway. I have known Walter for many years. We both worked together shooting rookie football cards for Upper Deck. Stockland Martel represents many of the best shooters around. They are all worthy of being documented for future generations to not only appreciate their work but the photographers as well.”

Portraits from Timothy Greenfield-Sanders' "The Black List."

On display in the National Portrait Gallery is a remarkable nineteenth-century painting by Christian Schussele called Men of Progress. Completed in 1862, it depicts nineteen inventors and scientists who had much to do with America’s triumphs during the Industrial Revolution. As the title suggests, all the sitters are indeed male, and not surprisingly for that era, all are white. Many of their names remain familiar today: Cyrus McCormick (the mechanical reaper), Samuel Colt (the revolver), Elias Howe (the sewing machine). In a fictitious setting, the artist has portrayed them clustered around the painter/inventor Samuel F. B. Morse, who is seated with his telegraph machine. They are an impressive group. You might call them their era’s White List.

Timothy Greenfield-Sanders’s inspiring new exhibition, “The Black List,” is a fresh twenty-first century take on the same theme: a collective portrait of people who have had, and continue to have, a transformative influence in American life. The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery is honored to present this project in the nation’s capital and to celebrate the individuals whose images are on view.

Lauren Greenfield: The Documentary Hybrid: Photography + Filmmaking

Description: As the future of print remains in question and the online presence of magazines and newspapers becomes more important, photographers need to consider how to harness new media, video and audio to enhance their photographic work and creative vision. Lauren Greenfield will lecture about her long-term documentary projects and her progression into film for creative impact and educational reach. In that context, she will show her evolution as a documentarian working within the varied platforms of documentary filmmaking, commercial directing, and multimedia producing, as well as the traditional but diversified outlets of magazines, books and museums. Greenfield will discuss the making of her commercials, documentary films and multimedia work; the relationship between her films (THIN, Kids + Money, Beauty Culture) and her photography, as well as how video and multimedia can deepen the narrative and provide access to a wider audience and a broader spectrum of commercial clients. She will also discuss the synergy of video and still cameras and the technical crossover possible with both. Vincent Laforet: Cinematography with a DSLR

Description: In this three-hour seminar, Vincent Laforet will outline some of the most common challenges still photographers are likely to face as they make their transition into cinematography. This presentation will focus mostly on using the new breed of digital SLRs to capture video, and the technical advantages and hurdles they present when compared to other devices such as the RED camera and other traditional camcorders. In addition, during a live shoot segment with the participation of a few lucky attendees, Laforet will demonstrate many of the DSLR accessories available to achieve professional results on larger productions. The post processing workflow, including video conversion, basic editing and grading will also be demonstrated. Intermediate level.

Doug Menuez: Creative Longevity: A Conversation with Four Living Masters

Description: Doug Menuez will moderate a discussion with master photographers Douglas Kirkland, Duane Michals, Jay Maisel and Mary Ellen Mark, exploring the challenges they’ve wrestled with and overcome over many decades to build extraordinary careers. The audience will hear personal views on how to create and sustain a satisfying and rewarding creative life in photography over the long haul. The youngest of these shooters has a career of more than 45 years, the oldest more than 60. Incredible! How did they do it? What decisions did they make early on that set the foundations? Did they ever think about the long term? Did they just have natural integrity and say no to things that were not right for them, or did they learn over time to choose for themselves what was appropriate and productive? What mistakes can younger photographers avoid? How do they see the future of photography, especially in light of all the digital changes, challenges to copyright and the massive influx of new photographers? The answers will undoubtedly surprise us, while hopefully inspiring those of us on the journey to continue with a renewed sense of purpose.

Art Streiber: The Big Picture: Editorial Photography Behind the Scenes

Description: What does it take to produce a photo shoot for the nation’s top magazines? What goes on behind the scenes during pre-production, on the shoot and in post-production? How do those production details scale up if you’re shooting eight, twenty-three or thirty-five subjects? And what are the key technology pieces that enable the pace of editorial work? In this three-hour seminar, Streiber will pull back the curtain on his published images and discuss every facet of editorial production?from getting the assignment to negotiating through the creative process to the importance of custom printing, color correction and post-production for the final look you want with digital delivery. The nuts and bolts of production will also be covered, with attention to subjects such as hammering out preproduction details, on-set digital practices and the on-line editing process, macro and micro managing the set and the people skills necessary to deal with both crew and talent. Finished images will be shown, as published in TIME, Entertainment Weekly and Vanity Fair and behind-the-scenes photos will reveal how the shoots came together. This seminar is ideal for beginning and intermediate photographers, as well as advanced shooters who are interested in fine-tuning their production process.

Lauren Greenfield‘s photo of models backstage at a 2010 Prada fashion show in Milan is on view through October 31 in the exhibit “Pictures of the Year,” at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. The show, explains the museum’s site, celebrates “the year’s best news images.” Lauren’s photo is from her “Fashion Week” story, which Pictures of the Year International honored with an Award of Excellence earlier this year in the Feature Picture Story category.

Michael Muller is popularly known as a Hollywood photographer, but with his latest project, he’s taking a big bite of the art world. The exhibition “Opposing Instincts” features Michael’s dramatic underwater photographs of great white sharks, as painted over by artist Sage Vaughn. The Outsiders gallery in London, whose starry roster includes Banksy, is showcasing this unusual collaboration and held a private view of the exhibition last night. The response has been enthusiastic, to say the least. The show is all but sold out, and I’m told that a major rock band has purchased one of the pieces for use in the packaging of their upcoming single.

Michael and Sage, both avid surfers, met through a mutual friend in Malibu. “He told me about a project he had been working towards down in Mexico: great white sharks, underwater lighting systems, cages. It all sounded incredible,” Sage recalls in the exhibition’s press release.

“We’d meet and talk about life, art, waves… One day he asked if I wanted to get some paint on one of the photos he took of the sharks. When I looked at those shots for the first time, my jaw dropped. I’ve been obsessed with sharks since I was a little kid, and even more so since I started surfing, but I had never seen shark images like these. Mike had taken such a different approach to portraying these amazing animals. The amount of character contained in these creatures’ faces was so beautiful, I couldn’t help but be inspired. When our first collaborative piece was finished, we knew we were really on to something.”

“What we discovered,” says Michael, “was that for some reason the two mediums worked for us and we really felt what was being co-created. Sharks and butterflies somehow took the fear of the solo shark away. I have been diving with and without a cage among these amazing animals for years and personally know how safe we are from them, but how do I translate that visually? Working with Sage has accomplished that for me. I feel these pieces somehow, some way, show these creatures in the way I feel about them.”
