Carrying her camera everywhere she goes, Roxanne Lowit has been an omniscient observer in the worlds of fashion, art, theater, film, and society for three decades, granting the rest of us access to even the most exclusive events and personalities by way of her photographs. Her visual style is at once celebratory, spontaneous-feeling, and uber-glamorous, a combination that has appealed to advertising and editorial clients at the highest level, including the Pierre Hotel, De Beers, Coca-Cola, Kate Spade, and Moet & Chandon.

“Famed photographer Roxanne Lowit has shot everything from ad campaigns…to editorials for Vogue and Vanity Fair, snapping celebrities like Scarlett Johansson and Johnny Depp in between,” noted New York magazine in 2009.

Roxanne began, however, not in photography but in textile design. This was in New York in the ’70s. “I’d take photos of my textiles backstage at the fashion shows, and eventually I realized that backstage was the place I wanted to be,” she says, “and photography was what I wanted to do.”

Roxanne’s photos have been collected in a number of monographs, including Moments (Assouline, 1993), People (Assouline, 2001), and the widely praised Backstage Dior (teNeues, 2009), which The New York Times called “the ultimate insider’s glimpse at some of John Galliano’s most exuberant ready-to-wear and couture shows for the French fashion house.”

Her work has also been exhibited in galleries, festivals, and museums around the world, including the Gagosian Gallery in New York, Art Basel Miami Beach, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

Despite the recognition she has received for her photographs, and in contrast to the glamorous settings she readily inhabits, Roxanne is actually quite unassuming and quiet in person. She lets her work speak for her, and the stories it tells are of an effervescent world that invites us to celebrate.

Luca Zordan.

In honor of this being the first day of school for most kids across the country, I thought I’d feature Luca Zordan, an especially gifted photographer of children. Although it’s not quite accurate to say that Luca photographs kids. His subject is actually childhood and all of the joy, wonder, potential, and magic that it represents. He captures the feeling of discovery that a child experiences as they come up in the world, and because he’s so attuned to kids—he and his wife have three daughters—his images always read as authentic and universal.

“Sometimes when I look through the lens at a child playing, laughing, or exploring, my camera becomes a time machine and I feel myself transported to memories of my own childhood,” says Luca, who has shot for magazines like Elle Junior, Grazia, and Junior, as well as ad campaigns for clients such as Replay & Sons, Catimini, Chicco, Guess, The Children’s Place, Oshkosh, and Crayola.

Luca, who was born in Venice, Italy, did not start out as a photographer of children. While studying art history in college, he worked as a darkroom printer for a famous  Italian ballet photographer and, after relocating Milan, went on to assist fashion photographers David Bailey, Oliviero Toscani, and others. He embarked on various personal projects during this time, including a series of panoramic New York photos that won him a European Kodak Award in 1992.

In the mid-’90s, Luca changed his focus to children, as he was drawn to their honesty and their inspiring sense of freedom. Having relocated to Miami (he’s now based in New York), he became the primary U.S. photographer for Vogue Bambini. And through the years, his dedication to photographing children as they are, and celebrating them as individuals, has only deepened. Luca has donated countless hours of his time collaborating on photo books whose mission is to raise money for kids in need. These include & Sons: Children Around the World, which benefited Doctors Without Borders, and The Children of China and The Children of Africa: South African Edition, both of which raised funds to enrich the lives of children suffering the effects of HIV/AIDS.

“I travel quite a lot,” says Luca, “and no matter where I go, the children are all beautiful in the same way—the Chinese, the English, the Icelanders, the Peruvians, the Japanese, the Africans… Let them play, let them run, let them jump, and you will always see the same inspiring enthusiasm for life.”

Uwe Duettmann.

Many people think of Uwe Duettmann in terms of his automotive photography, and it’s true that he’s highly skilled at portraying cars from any number of perspectives. Might, machine, materials, the experience of the drive, sex appeal, practical appeal, humorous appeal—he has expressed all of this and more for clients ranging from Mercedes to Mini, Porsche, Audi, BMW, and Smart. The man is basically a car-photography virtuoso.

But Uwe is driven by far more than just automotives. In Europe, in fact, he’s best known as a photographer of people. Some highlights from his portfolio: Two beehived women misbehave in an ad for Frau magazine; a beauty queen rides a subway in full pageant regalia for an Mtel campaign; a child dressed as a ladybug mopes atop a silver sedan in an ad for FTD. And then there’s his sports advertising for clients such as Nike, Adidas, and Asics, which captures the sweat, the emotion, the movement, and also a kind of marvelous power that comes only from great physical strength.

In the past two-plus decades, Uwe has amassed more than a few armloads of awards, including from the London International Advertising Awards, the Art Directors Club in Germany, and the AOP. But he rarely looks back. He hardly has time to, as he’s always in demand, always collaborating with another art director on another great image and always confident that he will hit his mark. “All I need is good direction,” he says. “It’s like jumping off a plane in a parachute: Even if the target is just one meter by one meter, I’ll land on it.”

Jeff Lipsky.

Before he moved to Southern California in 1998 to pursue photography, Jeff Lipsky spent a decade in the mountains of Telluride, Colorado, snowboarding in the winter and working as a fly-fishing guide in the summer. It was his version of an alternative lifestyle, and he loved it. His life now couldn’t be more different: He lives in Venice Beach with his wife and their kids, and he’s a successful celebrity portrait photographer. But he’s still the same easygoing guy who likes for things to feel unaffected and unforced, and it shows in his work.

Lipsky has photographed celebrities of every stripe for a wide variety of clients—from Vogue to Entertainment Weekly to Outside magazine—yet his images are consistently inviting, aspirational but real. “I like my portraits to have a healthy, warm energy,” explains Lipsky.

Though his Colorado days are behind him, Lipsky does get to revisit his sporty past. He’s taken actors fly-fishing, and—in what remains his favorite assignment so far—he once went heli-snowboarding for a week in Alaska with skateboard legend Tony Hawk for Men’s Health. “I spent seven days with Tony in bottomless powder in Alaska and took a beautiful portrait of him. I was with one of my favorite people I could possibly wish to be with because he was my hero as a kid,” says Lipsky. “It was everything I loved all wrapped up in one.”

Matthias Clamer.

Matthias Clamer likes quirkiness and humor, but he also likes stealth. “For me, humor in pictures works when you use it in small doses—hints, not obvious jokes,” he explains. “Just one element, not multiples. And subtle enough that some people don’t even see it. It needs to be discovered and ambiguous.”

In his personal work, these preferences play out in his choice of subjects: redheads, low-rider cars and their owners, celebrity look-alikes, and plane spotters at Heathrow Airport in London, to name a handful of recent examples. In his work as a highly sought-after entertainment photographer and celebrity portraitist, his subjects and an overall context are provided to him, but he always finds a way to add a dash of the unexpected. And he goes about this the old-fashioned way.

“I research my subject as much as I can. I look for personal traits and tastes and try to link the context of the story with the subject,” he says. “I like to earn my subjects’ and clients’ respect by being very well prepared with a plan for the shoot that I present ahead of time. I brief my subjects, but then give them space to ease into a shoot, trying not to bombard them with directions and turn them into a still-life object.”

Being sensitive to what his subjects are feeling is one of the reasons Matthias has been so successful at shooting successful people. “I am calm even on the craziest shoot schedules,” he notes. But he does not hesitate to challenge both the celebrities he photographs and the viewing audience who assume they know these people intimately. “Working around someone’s public image,” says Matthias, “is the fun part of what I do.”

Matthew Rolston.

Matthew Rolston has photographed just about every film, music, and television star working today. His approach to glamour, which embodies Hollywood’s past and its grand tradition of celebrity portraiture, has helped define the modern aesthetics of celebrity and beauty photography.

Matthew’s career as a photographer and director had a most auspicious, and unusual, beginning: He was “discovered” by Andy Warhol for Interview magazine, where his very first portrait assignment was of the then relatively unknown film director Steven Spielberg. Soon after, he began shooting covers and editorial assignments for Rolling Stone founding editor Jann Wenner. (To date, Matthew has shot nearly 100 covers for the magazine.) Others began to recognize Matthew’s talent, including publications such as Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, W, GQ, Esquire, and The New York Times Magazine.

Over the years, Matthew has formed lasting relationships with many different celebrities and magazines. He has had the unique distinction, for example, of photographing Oprah Winfrey for the cover of O, The Oprah Magazine an astonishing 33 times—more than any other photographer. He also worked with Michael Jackson for more than 30 years.

A sought-after music video and commercial director, Matthew has directed award-winning videos for artists such as Christina Aguilera, Mary J. Blige, and Miley Cyrus. And in 2010, he signed on with the Redbury in Hollywood, serving as creative director. His work for the boutique hotel has been widely praised, and earlier this year Condé Nast Traveler chose the Redbury for its 2011 Hot List.

Matthew’s photographs have been exhibited at prestigious galleries across the United States, in Europe and Japan, and at numerous museums, including the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, and at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. And they have been collected in two monographs: the limited-edition Big Pictures (Bulfinch Press, New York), which features an introduction by film director Tim Burton; and the lavish limited-edition coffee-table book beautyLIGHT, published in 2008 by leading German art-book publisher teNeues.

Matthew, whose production offices are in Beverly Hills, resides in Beverly Hills and Malibu. He continues to divide his professional time equally between photography and filmmaking, traveling constantly between Los Angeles and New York City.

Jason Hindley.

Jason Hindley’s commercial career began as one half of the acclaimed still-life duo Giblin & James, who produced distinctive images for numerous ad campaigns worldwide. In 2006, Jason ventured out of the studio environment and began to pursue his own personal style of photography, capturing enchanting images of the mundane and ordinary and focusing on the small oddities in everyday life that can so easily go unnoticed. “If I were to name the essential qualities that make a photograph my own, I would say ‘subtle, observed, understated,’” says Jason.

We might add “humorous” to that list, but Jason points out that humor isn’t his goal. “I don’t aim to create images that are wacky or humorous in an in-your-face way,” he says. “I like to be subtle, and most of the time, the element of humor comes as a byproduct of my trying to give my imagery some character or by approaching the images from a slightly different angle.”

In 2009, Jason amicably closed the chapter on Giblin & James in order to focus on bringing together his location work with his award-winning studio still-life work. His advertising and editorial clients include HSBC, Evian, Super Glue, Rachael Ray Every Day, Money, BlackBerry, Tropicana, and J&B.

“I love to find beauty in the most mundane and banal environments/subject matters,” he says. “I find this more exciting than simply photographing stunning scenery or a beautiful object. I find inspiration in everything—even in an electric kettle and some cups in a bed & breakfast room, a pair of flip-flops, or some egg cartons in a supermarket.”

John Offenbach.

John Offenbach is an award-winning editorial and advertising photographer whose images are often unfussy, tranquil, and dreamy. “I think of my pictures as having a light touch,” says John. “You could say they are considered, as opposed to snapped.”

John has been shooting Travelers Insurance campaigns for a number of years for Fallon, Minneapolis, and in September 2009 was honored with a Gold Award by Campaign magazine at the Campaign Photo Awards. His Travelers work also received first prize at the inaugural New York Photo Awards, and John was a nominee and finalist in the prestigious International Center for Photography’s Infinity awards.

The Travelers campaign features humorous scenarios, such as a water slide that ends in concrete, a Ferrari submerged in a swimming pool, and a bear destroying a pretty suburban kitchen. (The bear, by the way, was real. You can watch a short film of the shoot at John’s website, johnoffenbach.com.) John also recently completed campaigns for Hyundai, Porsche, and Disney.

John’s personal photography draws on a wide pool of interests, though landscapes have always been central to his work. He has photographed all over the world, from the glaciers in Patagonia to a series of magical scenes at some of southwest Florida’s tropical beaches. John also has explored the creative possibilities offered by CGI. But rather than create predictable pictures, John subtly crafts scenes that make you look twice; you are never quite sure of their origin. A couple of notable examples: a 1960s-era car resting peacefully upside down on its roof; and an abandoned Citroen on some perilous train tracks.

John has nurtured his longtime affinity for architecture through his photography, both in the book Architecture, published in 2000, and in documenting the annual pavilion commissioned by London’s Serpentine Gallery. Since 2005, he has photographed pavilions created by architects Frank Gehry and Rem Koolhaas, among others.

John, who lives in London with his wife and three children, has been known to go to great lengths for a good cause. Specifically, the length of the English Channel. In the late summer of 2009, he swam roughly 21 miles across this stretch of frigid water with his teammates in the charmingly named Belly Flops to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. It’s the kind of thing that most people would never dream of attempting. But then again, we never said John was like most people.

Michael Wirth.

Michael Wirth is a Paris-based beauty photographer known for his sophisticated use of light and his ability to capture the individual loveliness of his subjects, whether they’re models or real people. “You have to see the beauty in the girl,” he says. “I think everybody can be beautiful.” His portfolio ranges from ad campaigns celebrating natural beauty to glossy, sexy product still lifes and rapturous hair shots, with clients spanning every major beauty brand in the world, including Clairol, L’Oreal, Clarins Paris, and Nivea.

Among Michael’s 2010 campaigns was a series of ads for Dove featuring real people. Having worked with countless professional models, Michael was especially sensitive to the needs of his amateur subjects and took care to make them feel comfortable. “The agency had a dinner for us the night before the shoot in Los Angeles,” Michael recalls, “so I had a chance to meet the girls ahead of time. With all talent, you should be nice and also respectful, but with amateurs, it’s extra important to be open and to listen.”

Michael, who was born in Germany, began his career assisting fashion and beauty photographer Wolfgang Klein. In 1978, he moved to Paris and embarked on his own photography career. Among his early jobs was shooting for legendary Elle art director Peter Knapp. Michael had been eyeing a future in fashion, and his experience with Knapp proved to be a turning point.

“I shot some beauty jobs for Peter, and he remarked that my beauty is much better than my fashion,” Michael says. “I had always liked fashion because the client asks for something, and you have to find the solution. But I discovered that beauty is interesting in its own way.”
