In addition to fronting the chart-topping group Florence and the Machine, the towering, flame-haired Florence Welch has become a muse for the fashion world. And no wonder—she cuts quite a compelling figure. Any photographer would be thrilled to shoot her, but for a feature in the new issue of Rolling Stone, creative director Jodi Peckman chose Nadav Kander. “I was tired of seeing ‘fashion’ photos of her and wanted to do the opposite,” Jodi explained to me in an email. “I couldn’t think of anything that could possibly top a Nadav Kander portrait of her!”

The portrait above, which Nadav shot in London, accompanied a feature by Vanessa Grigoriadis titled “Florence and the Witch: How the arty, ethereal Florence Welch became the Stevie Nicks of the ‘Twilight’ generation.”

Nadav Kander photographs Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill for New York mag

The fall movie season is nearly upon us, and with it will come a new Brad Pitt film. In Moneyball, he plays Billy Beane, general manager for the Oakland A’s, who’ve fallen on hard times financially. Brad’s costar is Jonah Hill, who plays Peter Brand, an energetic upstart who’s convinced he can help Beane transform the team into World Series material. The drama, hitting theaters September 23, is based on a true story. For more on Moneyball, check out the “Fall Preview” issue of New York, on newsstands now. The cover features Brad and Jonah and was photographed by Nadav Kander, and there are additional portraits of the actors inside. Here’s a look:

Bill, Maureen, and the rest of the team at Stockland Martel hosted our annual Hollywood East Cocktail Party a couple of weeks ago, as a way to personally thank our clients in the entertainment industry here on the East Coast. The event, which was attended by photo editors, art buyers, and creatives, was held in the Gallery @ Stockland Martel, whose walls were filled with celebrity portraits by our photographers. Art Streiber goes behind the scenes at Cannes for People mag

The new issue of People magazine hits newsstands today, and it features a big 6-page portfolio by Art Streiber: “Cannes Behind the Scenes: The sun! The sea! and all those stars! We take a deep dive into the world’s glitziest film festival.”

“We went to Cannes to capture a look away from the red carpet at the Palais and to show a little bit of the Cannes scenery as well,” explains Art, who was commissioned by Brenna Britton, deputy photo editor at People. “We referenced a lot of beautiful vintage imagery from the early days of the festival, which turned 64 years old this year!”

Among the stars Art photographed during his whirlwind assignment: Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Salma Hayek, Dustin Hoffman, Jack Black, and Diane Kruger.

“My crew and I were there for seven days,” he says, “rallying from beachfront hotel to beachfront hotel, often having less than an hour to set up, light, and choreograph the photos. And when our subjects arrived, we had less than 15 minutes with them in front of the camera. Our shoots were at the Carlton and Martinez hotels in Cannes and at the Hotel du Cap in Antibes.”

Academy Awards portraits gallery!

In honor of this year’s Academy Awards, which gets started at Sunday at 8 PM EST on ABC, I thought I’d show off some of the portraits our photographers have taken of the 2010 nominees over the years. And then, out of curiosity, I started researching which previous nominees and winners our photographers have shot. The grand total? 76 performers and 12 photographers. (And I don’t doubt I missed a few.)

So here are the current nominees. And below that is a link to massive slideshow of nominees and winners past. In many cases, the same performer was shot by more than one of our photogs, so I included the same person more than once because, you know, it’s fun to compare and contrast.
