The current issue of Entertainment Weekly offers an exclusive preview of the superheroes in the highly anticipated movie The Avengers, which is headed to theaters in May. Michael Muller shot the Marvel-ous portraits—of Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Chris Evans, and Robert Downey Jr.—published with the story. Here’s a look.

Michael Muller’s Comic-Con celebrity portraits

Yesterday was the final day of Comic-Con 2011, which ran from July 21 to 24 in San Diego, and as part of its massive coverage of the event, Entertainment Weekly set up a studio at the Hard Rock Hotel so Michael Muller could take portraits of the many celebrities in attendance. Michael, who previously shot celeb portraits for EW for Comic-Con 2009 and 2010, shot more than 12,000 images in three days.

His photos are collected in a handful of galleries at ew.com: Comic-Con 2011 Star Portraits: Day 1, Day 2, and Day 3. And a slew of them will appear in this week’s print edition of the magazine. Here are some of the highlights from his assignment, for which he was commissioned by EW photography director Lisa Berman and West Coast deputy photography director Richard Maltz…

Michael Muller adds yet another superhero to his long list of superheroic entertainment portraits and posters—which includes X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Fantastic 4—with his photograph of actor Chris Evans as Captain America for a recent cover of Entertainment Weekly.

The portrait was part of the magazine’s “exclusive first look” at the highly anticipated movie Captain America: The First Avenger.
