Art Streiber on photographing legendary actors De Niro, Douglas, Kline, and Freeman. Plus: behind-the-scenes video

So Robert De Niro, Kevin Kline, Michael Douglas, and Morgan Freeman walk into a bar… It sounds like the start of a joke, but it’s what really happened at a recent Art Streiber shoot. AARP The Magazine asked Art to photograph the legendary actors, who are starring in the new movie Last Vegas, in a bar setting, decked out in tuxes, looking luxe and effortlessly iconic for a feature in the October/November issue. Below, Art talks about how he and his team pulled it off on a summer day, in a studio, in half an hour. Scroll to the end of the post to watch a video of Art’s shoot…

“There really is no other word to describe Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, and Kevin Kline except ‘legendary.’ These four icons of the silver screen have been working in television and motion pictures (collectively) for 181 years and have won six Academy Awards between them.

And it turns out that even though they’re credited with having worked on more than 300 movies and television shows, they had never worked together before they all joined the cast of their new movie, Last Vegas.

It was a very warm summer afternoon in New York City when the four of them got together for our shoot at Pier 59 Studios. Our producer, Inna Khavinson, organized every aspect of the shoot perfectly. The tuxedos were chosen and fitted by stylist Shala Rothenberg, and set designer Rob Strauss built out an incredible bar (from scratch) and borrowed bar stools from the King Cole Bar at the St. Regis hotel, which, luckily for us, was closed for renovations.

And even though we only had a half an hour on the schedule to shoot singles of each of them on one set and group shots on three different sets, they couldn’t have been more gracious and professional.

For our last, shot we landed at the bar. At this point, it was about 6:45 in the evening and the actors hit the bar like it was the real thing. Mr. Kline asked for champagne, Mr. Freeman requested Ketel One on the rocks, and Mr. Douglas asked for scotch on the rocks. But Mr. De Niro was a bit more specific. He wanted a gin-cucumber martini: slightly muddled cucumber, shaken with Sapphire and ice until frost chips began to form, poured into a glass with a slice of cucumber and absolutely no vermouth.

Which we made for him and he loved.

The four of them hung out at the bar chatting and laughing, and only occasionally glancing at the camera. Finally, I directed them to look at my first assistant and creative producer, Elaine Browne. When I told the guys that Elaine was going to be married in a few months, they all hoisted their glasses, toasted her…and that’s the captured moment that was published as the opener in the magazine.”

Nino Muñoz photographs Hugh Jackman for GQ Australia

Nino Muñoz photographed Hugh Jackman for the cover story of GQ Australia’s August issue, which takes readers “on set and up close with the Wolverine.”

“His films regularly top the box office and there’s little doubt Hugh Jackman is one of the world’s biggest stars, but he’s also managed to achieve something even more impressive—he’s still humble, grounded and, well, actually really nice,” the editors say in a preview of the story.

“We visit the set of The Wolverine, as Jackman buffs up, slaps on the mutton chops and gets the claws out as he prepares to re-visit his most iconic role. We talk to Jackman about the great roles—X-Men, The Boy From Oz—the not-so-great ones—Viva Laughlin, anyone?—what he does to get in shape, how the Aussie actor manages to handle life in the spotlight, and those persistent rumours about his personal life.”

Art Streiber photographs Will and Jaden Smith for New York magazine cover story

Art Streiber photographed Will Smith and his son, Jaden Smith, for this week’s New York magazine cover story. The famous father and son star in the new movie M. Night Shyamalan film, After Earth (opening Friday), and in the article, they talk about their relationship and their approach to working together.

Art’s photos of the two perfectly capture their familial bond—playful, loving—while showing off their natural ability in front of the camera.

“To be asked to shoot a cover for New York magazine is one thing, but to have Jody Quon, the director of photography at New York, on your set is an even more incredible honor,” says Art. “It is very rare that I get to work side by side with a photo director, especially one who has such a keen visual storytelling sensibility like Jody does.

“And Will and Jaden Smith are fantastic in front of the camera,” he continues. “They take direction, they improvise, and they are wonderfully good-natured about the process of being photographed.

“Jody presented me with her idea to strip away any and all other elements from the set, except our two subjects, allowing them to interact and play off of each other. And once Jaden chose the playlist on Pandora (old-school rap) and Will started shadowboxing, the moments just ‘happened’ and all I could do was keep shooting…”

Melanie Acevedo photographs “Smash” star Megan Hilty demonstrating “How to Be a Blonde Bombshell”

Melanie Acevedo recently photographed Megan Hilty in New York City for a fun Us Weekly beauty story in which the Smash star tries out iconic Hollywood “blonde bombshell” looks.

“Having the opportunity to photograph Megan Hilty was such a pleasure,” says Melanie. “Especially when I found out that she is also the voice of the garden fairy in Secret of the Wings, one of my son’s favorite movies.”

Melanie says the shoot was a blast and that Megan loved dressing up as Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly, and Brigitte Bardot.

“The highlight,” says Melanie, “was Megan singing ‘Happy Birthday’—while perched atop the piano—to my assistant Brian Delaney, just as Marilyn Monroe did to JFK.”

Kwaku Alston went to Atlanta to photograph Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry for the cover of Essence‘s June issue, which just hit newsstands. “We only had a total of 30 minutes to photograph these two media moguls and create an iconic cover,” notes Kwaku. “I am a huge fan of both Chris O’Dowd AND of Japanese businessmen, so this shoot was a YES for me from the second the phone rang,” says Art Streiber of photographing comic actor Chris O’Dowd for the June issue of GQ.

“The extras casting by my production company, Producit, was outstanding,” Art continues. “The location was ideal, and Chris came to play. One of the unpublished setups features him singing karaoke to a larger group of JBM, and he absolutely brought the house down as he crooned away…beautifully rehashing every ’70s love song on the playlist.”
