New work by Victoria Granof: “The Birthday Party” for Cherry Bombe’s “Baked Issue”

For the gorgeous new issue of Cherry Bombe—themed “The Baked Issue”—food stylist Victoria Granof and photographer Sarah Anne Ward collaborated on a cover story celebrating 50 years of the Easy-Bake Oven. “The Birthday Party” sprang from an idea proposed by Victoria, who had recently come across the Easy-Bake Oven from her childhood. Vintage toy though it may be, the oven still works—Victoria used it to bake the cakes you see in these photos.

Excerpt from “The Birthday Party”:

The Easy-Bake Oven in these pictures belongs to superstar food stylist Victoria Granof and is an original model from the early 1970s, the ones that “cooked” with two 100-watt light bulbs. “It was actually a hand-me-down from an older cousin, but I gave it more of a workout than she ever did,” says Granof.

“In a spurt of ‘Clear your life, Clear your aura,’ or some such thing, I cleaned out my storage unit last winter and found the oven, complete with 24 of the original boxes of cake/cookie mix,” she continues. “Part of the cleanse means you throw things out and while I was willing to toss the oven, I wanted to pay homage to it in print first.” Which is how this photo essay was born. The cakes were baked in the actual oven, but with conventional cake mixes. Granof tried using the original ones, but they were way past their expiration dates.

Her inspiration? “It came in/as a flash, almost fully orbed, as a tea party by/for a ‘special’ child—one who would have grown up as a bit of an oddball and into a conceptual artist. In the strangest way possible, I got to sort of go back and experience being an oddball 9 year old, making cakes in my little tin oven, but with the validation of the artist I would grow into.”

The images in the exhibition “Killed: Beautiful Food That Never Made the Cut”—featuring food stylist Victoria Granof‘s unpublished editorial collaborations with renowned photographers—are currently available for purchase in an online auction at biddingforgood.com. And you can indulge guilt-free: Net proceeds will benefit the nonprofit organization Just Food.

Just Food’s programs include helping groups start and run a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture); City Farms, which coordinates free urban agriculture workshops in low-income communities; and Fresh Food for All, which helps food pantries make fresh, nutritious, locally grown food available to families and individuals in need. The auction ends December 2 and features work that has excellent Christmas gift written all over it. Craig Cutler, Nigel Cox, Hans Gissinger, Kenji Toma, Plamen Petkov, Ilan Rubin, and Christian Witkin are among the photographers who contributed. There’s just one print of each photo, printed by master printer Jim Roselli of Xact Studios, using paper donated by Moab.

Feature Shoot previews “Killed”

Something we’re really looking forward to: “Killed,” food stylist Victoria Granof‘s exhibition of her unpublished editorial collaborations with renowned photographers. The show premieres to a by-invitation-only audience November 21 at Craig Cutler‘s New York City studio (Craig and Victoria have worked together many times) and then moves to Pure Space Studios, 601 W. 26th St., 12th floor, Suite 1225, where it will be on view to the public from November 25 to December 20.

For a sneak peek, visit Feature Shoot, which yesterday posted three “Killed” images—by Kenji Toma, Hans Gissinger, and the photo team Thomas Michael Alleman and Linda V. Lewis—along with extended captions penned by Victoria herself.

Collectors, take note: The images in “Killed” will be placed in a silent auction at BiddingForGood.com benefiting Just Food, a nonprofit organization that connects communities and local farms with the resources and support they need to make fresh, locally grown food accessible to all New Yorkers.

“Good Morning America,” The Huffington Post, Parade, and others feature food stylist Michelle Gatton’s latest project

Food stylist Michelle Gatton has been collaborating with her photographer friend Sarah Anne Ward to re-create famous works of art as delicious desserts—a Mondrian made of Jell-O, a Jeff Koons balloon dog fashioned from Twinkies, Damien Hirst’s famous diamond-crusted skull with candy dots in place of the gems, and much more.

The project, which also features the participation of food stylist Heather Meldron, has been showcased by Good Morning America, The Huffington Post, TrendLand, New York magazine’s Grub Street, and Parade, which said the project “will simultaneously fill you with hunger and delight.”

Christine Muhlke of Bon Appétit interviews food stylist Victoria Granof for the Tastemakers Issue of Cherry Bombe

Have you seen Cherry Bombe? It’s an artfully designed new magazine whose mission is to celebrate women and food. “Cherry Bombe features a variety of cultures, cuisines and voices—chefs and servers, food stylists and scientists, culinary icons and up-and-coming entrepreneurs—as documented by some of the most interesting food and fashion writers and photographers around,” founders Kerry Diamond and Claudia Wu explain at Cherry Bombe‘s Kickstarter page. “Almost all of the subjects and contributors are women.” (Find out more in T Magazine‘s preview of Cherry Bombe.)

The first issue of the biannual publication, “The Tastemakers Issue,” just hit newsstands and features contributors such as director Sofia Coppola and chef Gabrielle Hamilton, as well as a story on Stockland Martel food stylist Victoria Granof. The interview is written by Bon Appétit executive editor Christine Muhlke, who met Victoria a decade ago on a shoot for T Magazine, where Muhlke worked at the time.

“As soon as Granof unwrapped a leg of prosciutto with the fur still on, talking about how a guy she knew in Napa had shot the wild boar and cured the meat himself, I was a goner,” Muhlke writes in her introduction to the piece, recalling that first meeting. “She told me about the old Italian ladies in her Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, neighborhood who let her pick cherries from their secret backyard tree, which she turned into jam and booze. Later that day, when she was silently able to get the egotistical photographer to come around to her vision for the shoot, I knew this was a woman we could all learn something from.”

New work: Victoria Granof for Swallow magazine’s Mexico City issue

The new issue of Swallow magazine makes Mexico City its focus, with visually abundant features on subjects ranging from the supermarkets, to a cabaret dancer advanced in years but still fabulous known as “la china de Acapulco,” to a collaboration between food stylist Victoria Granof and photographer Bela Borsodi titled “The Power and the Glory.” Inspired by the Mexican High Baroque, the pair “conspire to create a reliquary of edible icons.” Here’s a look…

Victoria Granof styles “Guts of the Beast” for Black Ink magazine

Victoria Granof collaborated with photographer Marcus Nilsson—with whom she worked on the 2010 book Good Meat—on a feature for the exclusive Black Ink magazine, published biannually for members of American Express Centurion (if you have an American Express Black Card, you know what this is). The subject? Offal.

In “Guts of the Beast,” writer Tom Parker Bowles—yes, he’s the son of Camilla—talks organ meat with English chef Fergus Henderson, known both for his London restaurant St. John and his mastery at preparing offal in delicious ways.
