We’re thrilled to announce that Stockland Martel now represents photographer Melanie Acevedo. Melanie has worked all over the globe for a wide variety of advertising and editorial clients, including Motorola, Samsung, Sony, Anthropologie, J. Crew, Harper’s Bazaar, Town & Country, InStyle, Vogue Bambini, and Condé Nast Traveler. Her specialties are lifestyle, food, kids, and interiors, and—like Melanie herself—her photos are distinctively positive and warm while always being winningly stylish. “Beautiful and real” is how Liz Elert, VP of Creative at Target, once described her work. “You want to inhabit the worlds that Melanie creates,” says Maureen Martel. “They are bright, fresh, and fun. This optimism is a total reflection of Melanie’s personality, and it is what the world needs right now.”

You can tell that Melanie connects with her subjects: People always look relaxed and comfortable in her photos, whether it’s Simon Doonan and Jonathan Adler at their Shelter Island, New York, home or a perfectly cast model in an ad campaign. Also apparent is her keen eye for beauty and design. (She won a D&D Star of Design award in 2010.) “My work is approachable and aspirational,” notes Melanie.

Melanie discovered photography while taking an illustration class at Parsons School of Design in Paris. Photography was a required course, and she says it was love at first sight. She has been taking pictures ever since. She lives in the beach town of Sea Cliff, New York, with her family: husband Richard, daughter Violet, son Rockwell, and their two dogs, Mr. Magoo and Squirrel.

We’re thrilled to announce that Stockland Martel now represents noted food and photo stylist Victoria Granof. “Victoria’s food styling talents are legendary, AND she creates the warmest atmosphere wherever she goes,” says Bill Stockland. “It is always an honor to represent someone who is the best in their field and who lives and breathes their work because they love what they do.”

Victoria, whose creative vision is both unique and unabashedly passionate, is known for her “beauty is where you find it” sensibility and provocative photographs and motion pieces that manage to stay on brand while going off on a delicious tangent. “My food styling isn’t about the food,” she says. “It’s about the emotion.”

Victoria has been commissioned for editorial shoots and ad campaigns for clients ranging from Bon Appétit to Kraft, Nestle, Absolut, KitchenAid, and Clinique. And she has worked with many of the photo world’s best-known image-makers, launching her career with a decade-long collaboration with the great Irving Penn and later teaming up with Kenji Toma, Mitchell Feinberg, Hans Gissinger, and Steven Klein, among others. In addition to still images, her portfolio features video, including a number of short, striking motion pieces (a melting popsicle, a sizzling egg, a deconstructed still life) created with Craig Cutler for his CC52 series.

Classically trained at the famed Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, Victoria worked as a cooking instructor, chef, and pastry chef at restaurants in her hometown of Los Angeles before moving into photography. She lives with her son, Theo, in Brooklyn, New York, and is forever inspired by the city. “I’m influenced by daily life in New York,” she told the style-centric Web destination Rue La La. “I don’t text or talk on the phone while I’m on the street, so I notice and absorb everything.”

Hans Gissinger, edible bugs, and The New Yorker

The current issue of The New Yorker features a story by Dana Goodyear on the subject of eating bugs.”Ounce for ounce,” writes Goodyear, “many have the same amount of protein as beef—fried grasshoppers have three times as much—and are rich in micronutrients like iron and zinc.” Who knew?

The piece, titled—what else—”Grub” is illustrated by two photos by Hans Gissinger, styled by Victoria Granof. “While you’re reading the story, check out the photo (grasshopper, raspberry) by Hans Gissinger, a glorious photographer who has lately been gracing the pages of the magazine and whose photos you can also see on the walls of Mark Gold’s restaurant Eva,” writes Amy Scattergood in a column posted yesterday at LA Weekly‘s website. “Even more of Gissinger’s stunning photos line the walls now, since Gold recently remodeled the place.”

Spotlight: Jason Hindley

Jason Hindley.

Jason Hindley’s commercial career began as one half of the acclaimed still-life duo Giblin & James, who produced distinctive images for numerous ad campaigns worldwide. In 2006, Jason ventured out of the studio environment and began to pursue his own personal style of photography, capturing enchanting images of the mundane and ordinary and focusing on the small oddities in everyday life that can so easily go unnoticed. “If I were to name the essential qualities that make a photograph my own, I would say ‘subtle, observed, understated,’” says Jason.

We might add “humorous” to that list, but Jason points out that humor isn’t his goal. “I don’t aim to create images that are wacky or humorous in an in-your-face way,” he says. “I like to be subtle, and most of the time, the element of humor comes as a byproduct of my trying to give my imagery some character or by approaching the images from a slightly different angle.”

In 2009, Jason amicably closed the chapter on Giblin & James in order to focus on bringing together his location work with his award-winning studio still-life work. His advertising and editorial clients include HSBC, Evian, Super Glue, Rachael Ray Every Day, Money, BlackBerry, Tropicana, and J&B.

“I love to find beauty in the most mundane and banal environments/subject matters,” he says. “I find this more exciting than simply photographing stunning scenery or a beautiful object. I find inspiration in everything—even in an electric kettle and some cups in a bed & breakfast room, a pair of flip-flops, or some egg cartons in a supermarket.”
