The June issue of Men’s Fitness profiles three multimillionaires—Wes Moore, author, speaker, and host of the Oprah Winfrey Network show Beyond Belief; Joe DeSena, a businessman and founder of the physically grueling Spartan Death Race; and Strauss Zelnick, the man behind Grand Theft Auto IV—who believe that keeping fit has been key to their success. New work: John Midgley photographs Léon Krier at Yale for Architect magazine

John Midgley photographed Léon Krier for the new issue of Architect magazine, shooting the influential architect and outspoken urban planner at the Yale School of Architecture.

“The portrait was meant to show some of Krier’s disdain for bad urban planning (New Haven and Yale) and his looking down on it as his feelings of superiority,” John explains. “Also, the brutal concrete bunker building he is in—the Yale School of Architecture—being his refuge.”

John also shot a portrait of Krier with fellow architect Peter Eisenman (below). Read the accompanying story here.

John Midgley shoots photo series based on the unusual fashion-inspired masks of designer Shin Murayama

“Masks” is John Midgley’s latest fashion-based personal project and features the unusual creations of designer Shin Murayama, whom John met while working on his Brooklyn Circus photo series.

Murayama’s masks all incorporate an article of clothing, whether it be a New York Yankees ballcap or a sock, which he combines with an eccentric array of textiles. The overall effect is sometimes unsettling but never dull.

For models, John chose to work with his sons, whom he photographed at various locations in New York City.

“The masks remind me of what teenagers do—they try on identities,” says John. “That’s what fashion is, too—trying on different personas.”

On the HBO hit series Girls, Chris Abbott plays the hapless boyfriend of Allison Williams (daughter of Brian), whose hopeless devotion to her winds up being the undoing of their relationship. The poor guy can’t catch a break on the show, but in this fashion story photographed by John Midgley for Gotham magazine, he seems to be faring a bit better…

Salton Sea landscapes by John Midgley

The storied Salton Sea, a shallow lake on the San Andreas Fault in California, has for years attracted storytellers and imagemakers of all stripes because it symbolizes unbridled optimism (let’s have a lake in the middle of the desert!) and inexorable decay (a salinity level that is nearly inhospitable to fish, algae blooms from fertilizer runoff, rusted structures from its 1950s heyday as a resort spot, etc.). It’s a broken dream that begs to be fixed.

Brooklyn-based photographer John Midgley is one of the people who have fallen under the spell of this strangely beguiling place. Some years ago, he shot a fashion story at the Salton Sea. And this past January, he returned on his own to photograph landscapes. “There’s something repulsive and attracting about the Salton Sea,” says John.
