John Offenbach and the Belly Flops to swim around Manhattan September 13 in charity event

John Offenbach has gone to great lengths to raise money for charity. Specifically, the length of the English Channel, which he swam in 2009 with his band of friends the Belly Flops to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. That year, they raised 17,000 pounds for the JDRF. In 2012, John and friends set out to swim the Channel once again, and though John was bested by the water, he and his team raised close to 16,000 pounds. And now the Belly Flops are bringing their action to New York City.

On Saturday, September 13, the Belly Flops will swim around the island of Manhattan—just over 28 miles total—setting off from Battery Park and heading up the East River and then back down the Hudson. This time, their cause is the Kuleana street children center in Tanzania, which is part of the Cheka Sana Children’s Trust. The center helps kids who have been beaten, abandoned, or neglected. Their stories—captured in a short 2012 film by Tom Merillon, one of the Belly Flops—are heartbreaking, but the Kuleana center works hard to restore these children’s well-being and give them hope for the future. “The center is going through a bit of a transition period,” explains Tom. “They are in the process of creating a new center in which to house the children and carry on their great work, so funding is crucial to keep everything running.”

Fifty percent of the donations generated by the Belly Flops’ swim will go the Kuleana center. The other 50% will benefit the event’s organizer, Swim Free, a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing the level of safety for participants and organizers of events in and around the water.

John Offenbach photographs the new Serpentine Pavilion in London, designed by Smiljan Radić

Each year since 2000, the Serpentine Gallery in London commissions a top architect to create a temporary pavilion on its grounds in the city’s Kensington area. And many of those years, John Offenbach has photographed in and around the pavilions both to showcase their architecture and to communicate the experience of interacting with them.

This year, he shot the Serpentine Pavilion designed by Chilean architect Smiljan Radić. It is “a semi-translucent, cylindrical structure that resembles a shell and rests on large quarry stones” and “occupies 350 square meters of the Serpentine’s lawn,” the Serpetine’s website explains. “Radić’s design for a temporary pavilion has its roots in the architect’s earlier work, particularly The Castle of the Selfish Giant, inspired by the Oscar Wilde story and the Restaurant Mestizo—part of which is supported by large boulders.”

New work: John Offenbach for Beazley

Earlier this year, John Offenbach shot a campaign for Beazley based on real-life instances of data loss. And now the insurance company is following that up with a trio of ads—also shot by John—promoting it as an insurer for large-scale events, such as international sporting competitions, trade shows, and rock concerts. For this new campaign, John was asked to set up three scenarios showing people putting the finishing touches on an event: a groundsman checking the net and lines on a grass tennis court, a roadie tuning guitars onstage, and a maintenance man making sure everything is perfect. John Offenbach photographs Zaha Hadid’s Serpentine Sackler Gallery in London

The Serpentine Sackler Gallery, designed by famed architect Zaha Hadid, opened last week in London, and the gallery asked John Offenbach to document the event. The gallery is housed in what was a gunpowder store in the early 1800s and is located a short walk from the Serpentine Gallery. New personal work: photographs of Iceland by John Offenbach

London-based advertising photographer John Offenbach often uses his vacations with his family as a chance to produce a mini personal project. He did a small series on the quaint, faded houses of Arcadia, Florida, and shot atmospheric oceanscapes in Marco Island, Florida, for example.
