Communication Arts releases its 2011 Photography Annual

The competition was intense for Communication Arts‘ 2011 Photography Annual, with more than 5,000 entries vying for the approbation of the five-member jury. Among the 166 winners were three of our photographers: Nadav Kander, Art Streiber, and Liz Von Hoene, whose winning images are posted below. (Full gallery here.) Spotlight: Jeff Lipsky

Before he moved to Southern California in 1998 to pursue photography, Jeff Lipsky spent a decade in the mountains of Telluride, Colorado, snowboarding in the winter and working as a fly-fishing guide in the summer. It was his version of an alternative lifestyle, and he loved it. His life now couldn’t be more different: He lives in Venice Beach with his wife and their kids, and he’s a successful celebrity portrait photographer. But he’s still the same easygoing guy who likes for things to feel unaffected and unforced, and it shows in his work.

Lipsky has photographed celebrities of every stripe for a wide variety of clients—from Vogue to Entertainment Weekly to Outside magazine—yet his images are consistently inviting, aspirational but real. “I like my portraits to have a healthy, warm energy,” explains Lipsky.

Though his Colorado days are behind him, Lipsky does get to revisit his sporty past. He’s taken actors fly-fishing, and—in what remains his favorite assignment so far—he once went heli-snowboarding for a week in Alaska with skateboard legend Tony Hawk for Men’s Health. “I spent seven days with Tony in bottomless powder in Alaska and took a beautiful portrait of him. I was with one of my favorite people I could possibly wish to be with because he was my hero as a kid,” says Lipsky. “It was everything I loved all wrapped up in one.”

Bill, Maureen, and the rest of the team at Stockland Martel hosted our annual Hollywood East Cocktail Party a couple of weeks ago, as a way to personally thank our clients in the entertainment industry here on the East Coast. Justin Bieber has a new haircut—expect a collective OMG!!! among teens worldwide—and he debuts it on the cover of The Hollywood Reporter, on newsstands tomorrow. The portrait was shot by our own Jeff Lipsky and also features R&B megastar Usher and music-industry mogul Antonio “L.A.” Reid. Here’s a look:

Arriving at THR’s photo shoot on Monday, photographed by Jeff Lipsky, the 16-year-old teen phenom (who premieres Never Say Never Tuesday in Los Angeles) sported a fresh trim on his famous locks (styled by Vanessa Price) that he had received just two days before, as he prepared to be photographed alongside Usher, whom Bieber describes as “like a brother,” and Antonio “L.A.” Reid, chairman and CEO of Island Def Jam Music Group, the company that signed him in October 2008 (when no one else would). “We’re like a family coming together,” says Usher. “That’s what makes a great career.”

Long live Bieber fever!

Why you should check out the blog La Lettre de la Photographie

Have you seen the photo blog La Lettre de la Photographie? It presents photo news, interviews, and reviews and has a worldwide focus. You can watch a video portrait of Olga Sviblova, “the mother, the godmother of Russian photography,” who has just opened a photography museum; read a review of Karine Laval‘s exhibition of swimming-pool photos, “Mise en abyme”; view a portfolio of Frank Rothe‘s German gun photos; and learn that Elisabeth Biondi, the venerable New Yorker photo director, is leaving the magazine (!).

Today, there’s an interview by journalist and curator Thomas Erber with Nadav Kander. “Right from the start my photography had a sense of unease but also simplicity. Even my first pictures, which I made at 13, had the 48 year old in them,” Nadav tells Erber.

Recently, former American Photo editor David Schonauer, who writes the blog I Like to Watch, became a regular contributor to Le Lettre de la Photographie. Schonauer’s column, “USA Press Review,” will look at photographic stories in American newspapers and magazines. His first dispatch comments on the tumult in Tunisia and Egypt, as well as entertainment features, including ones shot by Annie Leibovitz, Terry Richardson, and Art Streiber:

The rumors are indeed true: Justin Bieber is on the cover of Vanity Fair! The magazine commissioned Art Streiber to photograph the floppy-haired pop sensation for its February issue, on stands now:

There’s also a behind-the-scenes video teeming with teens, including one who concedes, “Before this shoot, I was a fan, but I wasn’t, like, crazy psycho. But now I am.”

The Biebs on the cover of Vanity Fair?

Rumor has it that Vanity Fair is prepping a cover story on 16-year-old pop phenom Justin Bieber, which would make him one of the few—if not the only—teenage male stars to be featured on the cover in the Conde Nast pub’s history. “A source has confirmed to us that Justin Bieber is going to be on the cover of Vanity Fair in either February or March of 2011,” reports Fashionista.

Here’s a clip of the Biebs’ appearance this past April on Chelsea Lately. Host Chelsea Handler jokes, “What happens with the hair? When are you gonna show us your forehead?”
