Art Streiber on photographing Kerry Washington and the cast of “Scandal” for Entertainment Weekly

Entertainment Weekly asked Art Streiber to photograph the cast of the smash ABC hit Scandal for the magazine’s Fall TV Preview issue. Below, he talks about how he approached the shoot, as well as admires the overall fabulosity and generosity of Kerry Washington…

“Everyone in my family is a HUGE Scandal fan, so the news of my working with the entire cast of the ABC hit series was met with screams, howls, and tears at our house. To give a little bit more perspective on our intense devotion to the show, at the end of the season two finale in May, at the moment of the big ‘reveal,’ my older daughter literally fell off the couch.

And meeting the cast at Sunset Gower studios in Hollywood (where the show is produced) was a joy. They were all wonderfully considerate and gracious, especially Kerry Washington.

Kerry is absolutely as beautiful in person as she is onscreen and a complete natural in front of the camera, which is rare for most actors and actresses. In general, without a role to inhabit, blocking to execute, or dialogue to repeat, the majority of actors I photograph are quite nervous to be photographed. Not Kerry.

Kerry was superb—in the group shot, in the triple with costars Scott Foley and Tony Goldwyn, and on her own as we shot singles. And like I said, she was incredibly gracious, introducing herself to everyone on the crew as she arrived and thanking everyone on the crew as she left.

Entertainment Weekly had asked me to do a group shot of the cast of 10 actors, the White House team, and the Pope & Associates team. Due to the production’s shooting schedule, I had to photograph the warring factions separately, one group at a time, which meant keeping track of everyone’s placement and eye lines so that the final comp looked as legit as possible.

And Tony Goldwyn? As handsome and charming as he is on the show. After she promised to keep it together, I brought my ‘falling off the couch’ daughter to the show, and she and Tony spent a few minutes discussing their (other) favorite television show. My daughter insisted that Pretty Little Liars was worth watching, while Tony expressed his love for Breaking Bad.

Finally, we had photographed the “Pope & Associates” cast first, so when it came time to photograph the White House team, we needed to give Tony an eye line, as if Kerry were sitting there. So…I asked my daughter to sit in for Kerry… And she managed NOT to fall off the chair.”

Two times a lady: Kerry Washington looking fresh and fit in photos by Jeff Lipsky and drop-dead sexy in images by Nino Muñoz

It’s not uncommon for our photographers to have shot the same celebrity—Kwaku Alston and Nadav Kander have both photographed Brad Pitt (see Kwaku’s photos here and Nadav’s here), and Art Streiber and Michael Muller have both shot Alec Baldwin (with the actor holding a drink and smoking outside in his pajamas, respectively), for example.

But it’s rare that portraits of the same celebrity by different Stockland Martel photographers come out at the same time. Which is what happened this month: Nino Muñoz and Jeff Lipsky both photographed Kerry Washington—Nino for Uptown magazine and Jeff for Women’s Health. Their images show the stunning actress in two very different lights…

Michael Muller’s Comic-Con 2012 star portraits for Entertainment Weekly

As it has for a handful of years now, Entertainment Weekly commissioned Michael Muller to shoot portraits at Comic-Con, the wildly popular comic-book/popular-arts convention that takes place every year in San Diego.

At ew.com, the magazine has posted 105 of Michael’s star portraits from the three-day event. Here’s a look at 14 of them. For more, choose from the following ew.com galleries: Day 1, Day 2, and Day 3.

The magazine also asked Michael to photograph portraits of fans dressed in costume. Tomorrow we’ll post some highlights.

New work: Jeff Lipsky shoots “Most Beautiful” makeup-free actresses for People

For its annual “Most Beautiful” double issue this year, People magazine commissioned Jeff to photograph eight actresses who were wearing no makeup other than lip balm. In image-conscious Hollywood, that’s practically the same thing as revealing your real age and weight. As you can see from Jeff’s portraits, though, these talented women were in very good hands.
