You can see this in Steven Lippman’s latest ad campaign. He was asked to shoot print and direct a motion piece for JKL, a men’s apparel brand whose core identity is adventure and individuality. JKL was founded by actor Matthew McConaughey, who donates part of every sale to the Just Keep Livin’ Foundation, a nonprofit he established to provide after-school fitness and wellness programs in inner-city high schools.

JKL’s values are right in line with Steven’s. As a lifelong surfer and skater who traveled the world as a model before pursuing photography, he has had a life filled with adventure. And he is someone who gives back: For years, he has volunteered his time to organizations such as Surfers Healing, which works with kids who have autism.

For the JKL campaign, Steven’s mission was to show not just the clothes but a lifestyle. “I shot the best of both worlds—Images where you can see the detail in the clothes and others where it’s more of a feeling,” he explains.

His photos are being used in print, outdoor, in store, and on the JKL website. He also directed a video, on view at the JKL site, that captures the JKL vibe. Here’s a look…

Matthew Rolston.

Matthew Rolston has photographed just about every film, music, and television star working today. His approach to glamour, which embodies Hollywood’s past and its grand tradition of celebrity portraiture, has helped define the modern aesthetics of celebrity and beauty photography.

Matthew’s career as a photographer and director had a most auspicious, and unusual, beginning: He was “discovered” by Andy Warhol for Interview magazine, where his very first portrait assignment was of the then relatively unknown film director Steven Spielberg. Soon after, he began shooting covers and editorial assignments for Rolling Stone founding editor Jann Wenner. (To date, Matthew has shot nearly 100 covers for the magazine.) Others began to recognize Matthew’s talent, including publications such as Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, W, GQ, Esquire, and The New York Times Magazine.

Over the years, Matthew has formed lasting relationships with many different celebrities and magazines. He has had the unique distinction, for example, of photographing Oprah Winfrey for the cover of O, The Oprah Magazine an astonishing 33 times—more than any other photographer. He also worked with Michael Jackson for more than 30 years.

A sought-after music video and commercial director, Matthew has directed award-winning videos for artists such as Christina Aguilera, Mary J. Blige, and Miley Cyrus. And in 2010, he signed on with the Redbury in Hollywood, serving as creative director. His work for the boutique hotel has been widely praised, and earlier this year Condé Nast Traveler chose the Redbury for its 2011 Hot List.

Matthew’s photographs have been exhibited at prestigious galleries across the United States, in Europe and Japan, and at numerous museums, including the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, and at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. And they have been collected in two monographs: the limited-edition Big Pictures (Bulfinch Press, New York), which features an introduction by film director Tim Burton; and the lavish limited-edition coffee-table book beautyLIGHT, published in 2008 by leading German art-book publisher teNeues.

Matthew, whose production offices are in Beverly Hills, resides in Beverly Hills and Malibu. He continues to divide his professional time equally between photography and filmmaking, traveling constantly between Los Angeles and New York City.
