PDN interviews Walter Iooss about his longstanding collaboration with sports icon Michael Jordan

The cover of PDN’s October issue features a photo of Michael Jordan that Walter Iooss shot in 1996 for a WorldCom promotion.

The new issue of PDN explores the long-term collaborations between four photographers and their subjects—including Walter Iooss and basketball legend Michael Jordan, whom Walter first photographed back in 1987 on assignment for Sports Illustrated.

In the article, Walter talks about how the two became friends, the deep trust that exists between them, the benefits of having rare access to a star athlete, and the challenge of getting an iconic shot in a just a few moments.

“I love the pressure of it,” Walter tells PDN‘s David Walker. “An athlete plays by the clock, and now I’m on their clock. To me, it’s just another game.”

Folio magazine looks at PDN’s Photo Annual cover featuring a portrait by Nadav Kander

For the cover of its 2013 photo-annual issue, PDN selected a portrait by Nadav Kander of British actor Bertie Carvel, from a portfolio Nadav shot for The New York Times Magazine. “We worked from a list of 18 potential cover images,” PDN creative director Darren Ching tells Folio magazine, in an article exploring the cover-selection process.

“In a dialogue between the editorial, photo, art departments, and our publisher, we discussed the merits and problematics of the images until there was a strong consensus.”

Folio also asked a couple of well-known graphic designers to weigh in on the cover, for additional perspective.

“Beautiful photo choice from a stunning New York Times Magazine photo essay, and photographer Nadav Kander is a perfect choice for a ‘best of’ (creative year 2012) issue,” said Dave McKenna, art director at Denver magazine 5280. “I think this particular photo even tapped into the zeitgeist of 2012–a year when The Artist won the Academy Award for Best Picture.”

Veteran art director Robert Newman was also a fan of the cover choice. “This is a perfect magazine cover image: Surprising, stylish, fun, engaging and artful—all at the same time,” he said.

PDN explores how Nigel Cox does “still life photography on a grand scale”

For its August issue, PDN interviewed Nigel Cox about a recent shoot he did for Dwell magazine. The assignment, PDN notes, was to show upholstery fabrics draped over things, but Nigel suggested covering variously shaped objects and arranging them to look like they were suspended in midair. “I always pictured them as floating,” he tells PDN.

PDN interviews Melanie Acevedo about achieving the ever-elusive work-life balance

The new issue of PDN asks a handful of professional photographers who are also parents about how they balance their career and family responsibilities. One of the photographers they interviewed is Melanie Acevedo, who juggles working for clients such as Target, Land of Nod, Motorola, and Jonathan Adler with raising her two kids—Violet and Rockwell—with her husband, Rich.

“I think it’s especially good for my daughter to see a strong woman who works and makes hard decisions,” Melanie tells PDN‘s Denise Schipani. “She can see that she can do things with her life. And my son? He thinks it’s possible to live in the Four Seasons!”

Photo District News selects Tobias Hutzler for “PDN’s 30: Our Choice of New and Emerging Photographers to Watch”

Congratulations to Tobias Hutzler, who has been named one of PDN‘s 30 photographers to watch in 2013. He was selected by the magazine’s editors from more than 300 photographers from around the world.

“We are huge believers in Tobias’ talent, and it’s gratifying to know that the editors share our enthusiasm for his work,” says Maureen Martel. “PDN‘s 30 is a go-to resource for photo editors and art buyers, and we’re excited to see what new opportunities this honor opens up for Tobias.”

Panelists at PDN’s PhotoPlus Expo provide insight into “What Photo Editors Want”

If you missed the panel discussion “Your Picture Here: How to Get Published in The New York Times, Time, GQ and Wired,” at PDN‘s PhotoPlus Expo, make your way over to pdnpulse.com for PDN managing editor Meghan Ahearn‘s summary. The panelists—photo editors from the above magazines—shared their thoughts on the kinds of promos they like to receive, the value of personal work, and even whether they prefer to see a tearsheet of a published piece or just the image.

Here’s an excerpt:

Almost all of the panelists preferred printed promos to mass e-mails or cold calling. Paul Moakley of Time compared the promo process to courting: Only after a few introductory mailers is it OK to call or e-mail him to request a meeting. [Krista] Prestek [of GQ] noted that since her first priority is the magazine, hard copy promos are better because they let her see what the work looks like on the printed page. She also suggested photographers pick an image that is in line with the magazine to use on their promo. [Carrie] Levy [of Wired] doesn’t mind e-mails, but noted a few things photographers shouldn’t do: send e-mails first thing in the morning (when she has the most e-mails in her inbox); compose mass e-mails instead of personalized ones; and embed images in the body of the e-mails because they don’t show up. Finally, The New York Times Magazine’s Clinton Cargill noted that sometimes years go by between the first time he first sees a photographer’s work and when he gives the photographer an assignment, so it’s always good to keep the photo editor up to date via mail or e-mail in terms of what you’ve been working on.
