PBS to air Timothy Greenfield-Sanders’ award-winning documentary “Lou Reed: Rock and Roll Heart” next week

The October 30 issue of The Village Voice features a portrait of the iconic musician by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders.

PBS has announced plans to broadcast Lou Reed: Rock and Roll Heart on November 7, as part of its American Masters series, USA Today reports. The 1998 documentary on the pioneering artist, who died on Sunday, was directed by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, who was a close friend of Reed’s. The film went on to win a Grammy in 1999 in the long-form music video category.

“Lou Reed’s music was the backbeat to our lives and his lyrics were our conscience,” Timothy said in a statement. “His death is a blow, not only to New York City, but also to the world.”

The documentary, notes Slate, “features interviews with Reed and just about everyone you’d like to hear on him, including David Bowie (who worked with him on Transformer), Philip Glass, Patti Smith, Thurston Moore, David Byrne, John Cale, and other surviving members of the Velvets. They even spoke with Holly Woodlawn and “Little” Joe Dallesandro, the drag queen and the street hustler immortalized by Reed in “Walk on the Wild Side.”

Timothy photographed Reed many times over the years, and he shared some of Reed’s favorite portraits from those shoots—including the one below—in his Huffington Post column the day Reed died. “Lou Reed is with us always,” Timothy writes. “It was a privilege to be his friend.”

Nadav Kander photographs Prince Charles for Time magazine

Nadav Kander photographed Britain’s Prince Charles for the new issue of Time magazine, a cover shoot that took place at the Prince’s private residence in Scotland. The images, says London-based Time editor at large Catherine Mayer, are “astonishing.”

“This is Britain’s heir apparent as he has never before been seen, ” she writes at Time’s Lightbox blog. “Composed, regal, but more than a little vulnerable.”

In her post, Mayer also reveals that Nadav—who has photographed five cover stories for Time—needed less than the scheduled 45 minutes. “We very quickly got to some very good pictures,” Nadav tells her, noting that he and the Prince really “gelled.”

Nadav Kander photographs actor Michael Shannon for Port magazine’s first word-free cover

In magazine publishing, great coverlines are as important to the success of a publication as the cover image itself. So it’s an unconventional move on the part of London-based men’s magazine Port to publish an issue with no coverlines at all. The autumn edition, on newsstands now, features only the title and a portrait of actor Michael Shannon (of Boardwalk Empire and Man of Steel) by Nadav Kander.

“If you’re going to publish your own magazine, break some rules along the way, and this new Port cover is a great example of doing just that,” notes the blog magCulture. “Leading with actor Michael Shannon shot in London by Nadav Kander (and styled by David St. John-James), it is the magazine’s first word-free cover. A brave move based on the power of the image. Many magazines publish subscriber covers with a similar simplicity, but their newsstand versions always succumb to the word.”

In New York magazine’s Fall Preview 2013 issue, on newsstands now, big-screen comic actress Anna Faris talks about making her first foray into TV with the new CBS comedy Mom. Here, Art Streiber offers a glimpse behind the scenes of his shoot with the expressive star as they collaborated on a multifaceted portrait concept to accompany the story…

“Anna Faris absolutely KILLED IT on our New York magazine shoot!

We kept the backdrops simple, the music cool and jazzy, the mood light, and the imagery graphic and expressive. Photography Director Jody Quon’s idea was to create a grid of different expressions for Anna, playing off the natural graphic qualities of her face and hair. As the Stan Getz channel played on Pandora, I led her through a number of thoughts and cues that illicited a multitude of expressions from Anna, each one, better than the next.

Anna told me the story of how the script for Mom just arrived at her house one day, unsolicited and unannounced, and her husband read it before she did. Apparently, after reading the first page, he turned to her and said, ‘You have to do this! This character is totally you!’

We had a blast together, discussing the pros and cons of celebrities and social media, and the shoot was over in no time… In fact, she told me that it was the most fun she’d ever had on a photo shoot, which is always great to hear!”
