In addition to fronting the chart-topping group Florence and the Machine, the towering, flame-haired Florence Welch has become a muse for the fashion world. And no wonder—she cuts quite a compelling figure. Any photographer would be thrilled to shoot her, but for a feature in the new issue of Rolling Stone, creative director Jodi Peckman chose Nadav Kander. “I was tired of seeing ‘fashion’ photos of her and wanted to do the opposite,” Jodi explained to me in an email. “I couldn’t think of anything that could possibly top a Nadav Kander portrait of her!”

The portrait above, which Nadav shot in London, accompanied a feature by Vanessa Grigoriadis titled “Florence and the Witch: How the arty, ethereal Florence Welch became the Stevie Nicks of the ‘Twilight’ generation.”

While we’re on the subject of portraiture, here’s a look back at eleven of Nadav’s other photos of notable names: Robert Plant, Larry King, Michael Fassbender, Mike Tyson, the Arctic Monkeys, Nick Cave, Matt Lucas, Werner Herzog, Lily Allen, Jonah Hill and Brad Pitt, and Ricky Gervais.

.

At her eponymous blog, photographer Amy Stein wrote about “How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Sharing My Work Online.” Excerpt: “I fully support the proper attribution of images and have done so on my blog since day one. In the age of Google Image Search, there is absolutely no excuse for not crediting an artist. But, I’m also a realist and long ago I fully embraced the idea that my images will travel and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, it’s mostly a very good thing. If someone is moved to share my work or inspired to use it to create something new, that’s kind of cool. I know the free flow of my images has certainly helped my career and I often tell my students to swim with the current and make their work as shareable as possible.”

Lost at E Minor featured Sacha Goldberger’s “Before and After Shots of Joggers.” Goldberger “created an outside studio at a park in Paris called Bois de Boulogne and asked random joggers if they would sprint, pose for a photo, then come back to his professional studio a week alter for a follow-up shot: ‘I wanted to show the difference between our natural and brute side versus how we represent ourselves to society.’” The series made me think of Claire Felicie‘s triptychs of Dutch marines, as seen at the Lens blog earlier this month, and of the putative validity of the before-and-after conceit as a form of revelation.

Shots magazine issued a “Call for Work” for its autumn issue.
David Schonauer of The Big Picture interviewed Matthew Rolston about his racy True Blood cover for Rolling Stone. Excerpt: “There are differences between stage bloods,” he says. Rolston acquired his familiarity with the fake stuff several years before, while shooting a portrait of Jack Nicholson, who was appearing as a particuliary homicidal gangster in Martin Scorsese’s The Departed. (The character, by the way, was based on the recently arrested mob boss Whitey Bulger.) “What you don’t want is the stuff that stains the skin, because you don’t do the actors any good with that. They turn pink. Basically you want washable and non-toxic, because it gets all around their mouths, the way I do it.”

Resource magazine’s blog wrote about a new “major trend” called rooftopping, in which shooters take vertiginous photos from on high.

At The Huffington Post this week, Ricky Gervais wrote that he wants the public to help him choose a photo for the poster promoting his upcoming tour, “Humanity.” One of the leading candidates is this portrait shot by Nadav Kander:

.

Ricky Gervais. Photo by Nadav Kander.

.

“I love this pic,” writes Gervais of the image, which is from a shoot Nadav did for a Rolling Stone feature on the actor/comedian/director that appeared in the April 14, 2011, issue. (You can see another photo from their session at RollingStone.com.)

Gervais’ post, which also includes a portrait by Rich Hardcastle, has already drawn more than 500 comments. One person cast her vote for Nadav’s portrait, enthusing that Gervais looks “10 years younger and hot.” Want to weigh in? Go here to vote.

Matthew Rolston has photographed just about every film, music, and television star working today. His approach to glamour, which embodies Hollywood’s past and its grand tradition of celebrity portraiture, has helped define the modern aesthetics of celebrity and beauty photography.

Matthew’s career as a photographer and director had a most auspicious, and unusual, beginning: He was “discovered” by Andy Warhol for Interview magazine, where his very first portrait assignment was of the then relatively unknown film director Steven Spielberg. Soon after, he began shooting covers and editorial assignments for Rolling Stone founding editor Jann Wenner. (To date, Matthew has shot nearly 100 covers for the magazine.) Others began to recognize Matthew’s talent, including publications such as Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, W, GQ, Esquire, and The New York Times Magazine.

Over the years, Matthew has formed lasting relationships with many different celebrities and magazines. He has had the unique distinction, for example, of photographing Oprah Winfrey for the cover of O, The Oprah Magazine an astonishing 33 times—more than any other photographer. He also worked with Michael Jackson for more than 30 years.

A sought-after music video and commercial director, Matthew has directed award-winning videos for artists such as Christina Aguilera, Mary J. Blige, and Miley Cyrus. And in 2010, he signed on with the Redbury in Hollywood, serving as creative director. His work for the boutique hotel has been widely praised, and earlier this year Condé Nast Traveler chose the Redbury for its 2011 Hot List.

Matthew’s photographs have been exhibited at prestigious galleries across the United States, in Europe and Japan, and at numerous museums, including the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, and at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. And they have been collected in two monographs: the limited-edition Big Pictures (Bulfinch Press, New York), which features an introduction by film director Tim Burton; and the lavish limited-edition coffee-table book beautyLIGHT, published in 2008 by leading German art-book publisher teNeues.

Matthew, whose production offices are in Beverly Hills, resides in Beverly Hills and Malibu. He continues to divide his professional time equally between photography and filmmaking, traveling constantly between Los Angeles and New York City.

The first in the series, which appears in Rolling Stone, features a portrait of Olympic medalist Michael Phelps by our own Jim Fiscus (above) for ESPN The Magazine.

The publishers behind the campaign are Charles H. Townsend, Condé Nast; Cathie Black, Hearst Magazines; Jack Griffin, Meredith Corporation; Ann Moore, Time Inc.; and Jann Wenner, Wenner Media. The agency was Young & Rubicam.

“A lot of us sat back for way too long and listened to all this abuse and said nothing about it,” Wenner told the Journal. “Meanwhile, we sit on top of one of the greatest mediums.”

The publishers also filmed a short video for the campaign:

Created by Y&R NY, the “Magazines, The Power of Print” campaign will roll out in the May issues (for weeklies, the issues on sale the week of April 5) of nearly 100 titles and run for seven months in magazines and Web sites from the five publishers, as well as Active Interest Media, American Express Publishing, Bonnier Corporation, Emmis Publications, ESPN, National Geographic, New York Magazine, and third-party sites in the food, shelter, sports, entertainment, fashion and news categories, reaching a combined 112 million readers per month. A complementary digital component will support the print campaign beginning this spring.

With the full support of the Magazine Publishers of America (MPA), the campaign targets advertisers, shareholders and industry influencers, and seeks to reshape the broader conversation about magazines, challenge misperceptions about the medium’s relevancy and longevity, and reinforce magazines’ important cultural role.

To achieve maximum impact, the ads will debut as color spreads, prominently placed in May issues of the publishers’ top titles with headlines such as, “We Surf the Internet. We Swim in Magazines.” And “Will the Internet Kill Magazines? Did Instant Coffee Kill Coffee?” These will be accompanied by iconic images lifted from the pages of America’s best-known magazines. A second phase, which will start appearing in June issues, will embed multiple cover images from widely recognized publications into the ad’s text to convey key phrases. To view ad visuals, visit the downloadable photos section on the right.

A special “Magazines” logo will debut with the campaign. Y&R NY created the image by combining the distinctive typographies of multiple magazine logos: “M” from Time, “A” from Vanity Fair, “G” from Rolling Stone, “A” from Entertainment Weekly, “Z” from Harper’s Bazaar, “I” from Marie Claire, “N” from Fortune, and “ES” from Esquire.

Metrics supporting the campaign’s message include:

1. Magazine readership has risen 4.3% over the past five years (Source: MRI Fall 2009, Fall 2005 data)
2. Average paid subscriptions reached nearly 300 million in 2009 (Source: MPA estimates based on ABC first half 2009 and second half 2009 data)
3. Adults 18-34 are avid magazine readers. They read more issues and spend more time per issue than their over-34 counterparts (Source: MRI Fall 2009 data)
4. During the 12-year life of Google, magazine readership increased 11% (Source: MRI Fall 2009 data)
5. Magazine effectiveness is growing. Ad recall has increased 13% over the past five years. Action-taking—based on readers recalling specific ads—increased by 10%. (Source: Affinity’s VISTA Print Effectiveness Rating Service, 2005-2009)
6. Magazines outperform other media in driving positive shifts in purchase consideration/intent. (Source: Dynamic Logic)

“There’s a reason magazines are such an enduring and engaging media force,” said Charles H. Townsend, president & CEO of Condé Nast. “The format showcases our rich content and our advertisers’ brand messages like no other medium, resulting in a bond with consumers that is uniquely powerful.”

“This campaign supports the fact that there really is no better medium to advertise in than magazines,” said Cathie Black, president, Hearst Magazines. “Magazines are the most cost effective and consistent medium at both ends of the purchase funnel. They drive consumer attitudes and intended behavior more effectively and efficiently than viewing television advertising alone or when TV is combined with online advertising.”

“The campaign reflects the vitality magazines have now, and will continue to have with audiences of all ages,” said Jack Griffin, president, Meredith National Media. “Clearly, magazines continue to resonate on many levels with consumers, and this is reflected in the enormous trust and value readers have for their favorite magazine titles.”

“Together, we can change the conversation about magazines and share what we in the business know to be true: magazines are relevant, play an important role in society and have a strong future ahead,” said Ann Moore, chairman & CEO, Time Inc. “This campaign showcases those messages of relevancy and longevity.”

“Magazines have enduring values for readers and advertisers that have gotten a little neglected and misunderstood in the era of Internet instant buzz and chatter,” said Jann Wenner, chairman, Wenner Media. “Magazines are beloved and powerful in people’s lives for very good reasons that need to be remembered and reinforced. That’s what this campaign is about.”

Have you seen the new issue of Rolling Stone? Matthew Rolston’s portrait of the Jonas Brothers gives the baby-faced pop trio some surprisingly adult edginess—with his white T-shirt, tight black jeans, and unruly dark curls, lead singer Joe Jonas in particular smolders like a young Chris Cornell.

<img class="size-full wp-image-738" title="rolstonjonas" src="http://stocklandmartelblog.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/rolstonjonas.jpg?w=600" alt="The Jonas Brothers (from left: Kevin, Joe, and Nick) photographed at Smashbox Studios, Culver City, California, May 6, 2009.
The Brothers, who range in age from 16 to 21, got their start on the Disney Channel, which is not the way most (or, okay, any) rock stars are born. Hence the angle for the story, which is titled “Jonas Brothers: Boys to Men,” with the subhead “America’s biggest teen idols attempt a nearly impossible feat: courting rock credibility while hanging on to their bubblegum image.” The piece was written by Rolling Stone contributing editor Jenny Eliscu, who hosts an indie-music show on Tuesdays on Sirius Satellite Radio Channel 26 that I listen to whenever I can. Jenny’s got a dry, sarcastic Janeane Garofalo style of humor. She’s also really smart. Should be interesting to read her take on these fledgling rockers.

From the buzz online and in print, you’d think that being gay was the biggest news since George W. almost choked to death on a pretzel. That’s how it seems, anyway, if you’ve been following the story of Adam Lambert, the spiky-haired singer from Season 8 of American Idol. Lambert chose to keep his sexuality a secret during the run of the show, maybe out of strategic reasons, maybe because he somehow thought he was entitled to a private personal life. Well, the private part is definitely over now—he sat for an interview with Rolling Stone and a cover portrait with Matthew Rolston. We’d ask that serpent what he’s thinking, but we’re told he doesn’t hiss and tell.
