International Photography Awards winners announced

.The jurors of the 2011 International Photography Awards have named their selections for subcategory and category winners, and we’re ecstatic that Kwaku Alston, Matthias Clamer, Nadav Kander, and John Offenbach are among their favorites. Our congratulations to them and to their fellow winners. Well done!

“Category winners,” the IPA’s site explains, “will move on as finalists competing for the Photographer of the Year (professional) and the Discovery of the Year (emerging) titles, as well as that of Deeper Perspective Photographer of the Year.” Those winners will be announced at the Lucie Awards on October 24 at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

New work by Matthias Clamer: Rufus Wainwright and Julian Casablancas

“We shot at the Steinway showroom on 57th,” writes Matthias. “The mood was very somber. His mom had passed away the week before. He played the piano through most of the shoot.”

This portrait was commissioned for the magazine’s “Having a
drink with…” feature. “Russ, the photo editor, asked me to shoot
him in a bar or pub,” explains Matthias. “The problem: Julian is sober
these days. I opted for empty and tipped-over glasses.”
