“I shot these last week—the evenings have been so amazing that I had to jump in the water,” says Steven Lippman, who is based in Malibu. “The surf was 1 foot, but the conditions were too tempting not to get wet with a few of the boys.” His gear for these images, which he calls “Salt Dirt”: a Canon 5D Mark III and Aquatech water housing.

New portraits by Steven Lippman: pro surfers and locals at the SurfAid Cup Malibu

The SurfAid Cup Malibu can always be counted on for a good time in the name of a good cause. The surfing competition, hosted by SurfAid, attracts both top surfers and amateurs, all of whom pour their heart and their time into raising funds for the nonprofit humanitarian organization.

At this year’s SurfAid Cup, which took place earlier this month, Steven Lippman and his team, the SurfAiders, placed third among 11 teams and raised more than $6,000, contributing to a total of $75,000 raised for SurfAid.

The competition was set up as a tag-team event, and in between heats, Steven made time to shoot portraits of some of his fellow competitors (including pro surfers Tom Curren, Greg Long, Reef McIntosh, and Travis Logie); his son, Ryder, who came out to support his dad; and a couple of the locals, like Malibu Carl, seen below with his shirt pulled up above his belly…

Steven Lippman’s “Surf Rodeo” photos

The Surf Rodeo is an annual event in California that blends competitive surfing with music and a cowboy theme. Basically, it’s an excuse to wear a Stetson—or in one guy’s case, a Mexican wrestling mask—in the ocean, see cool bands play, and have an awesome time.

“The Surf Rodeo is the brainchild of JD Drury,” explains surfrodeo.org. “JD’s background in the surf, skate and music industry gives him the perfect perspective on how contests and events have become stuffy and boring. His goal is to put the fun back into surfing, including the music that naturally complements it.”

Jorg Badura shoots surfing-inspired yoga story for Shape magazine

Photographer Steven Lippman lends his support to Life Rolls On’s “They Will Surf Again” program

Life Rolls On—a nonprofit that funds spinal-cord-injury research and helps to educate the public about these sorts of injuries—hosted a “They Will Surf Again” event this past weekend to “empower paraplegics and quadriplegics to experience the freedom of mobility by riding a wave with the assistance of adaptive equipment and the support of hard working volunteers.” One of those volunteers was photographer and surfer Steven Lippman. Tonight in L.A.: “Moments: Surf Culture by Steven Lippman”

The reception for “Moments: Surf Culture by Steven Lippman” kicks off tonight at 6 at 5th and Sunset Studios in L.A. The event is being sponsored by Andresen Digital Prepress, Angel City Brewery, Compound Project, GoPro, The Grilled Cheese Truck, and James Perse, who has generously donated “Moments” T-shirts created exclusively for Steven’s show and available for sale only at the reception.

The “Moments” T-shirts by James Perse come in both men’s and women’s sizes.

There will also be a raffle to win two complete GoPro Hero3 camera packages. Proceeds from the raffle and the sale of the shirts will benefit A Walk on Water, a nonprofit organization that provides water therapy through surf instruction to special-needs kids.
