Gina Salamone of the New York Daily News interviewed David Drebin about the “voyeuristic views” in his new book, The Morning After, for a feature that appeared in the newspaper last week. Here’s an excerpt:

.

"Girl in Orange Dress," by David Drebin. From the book "The Morning After."

"On the Bridge," by David Drebin. From the book "The Morning After."

.

Central Park has been captured by countless photographers – amateurs and professionals – but few shots are as dramatic as one David Drebin took for his latest book. A cityscape with the park as the focus is just one of the scenic shots featured in “The Morning After,” a collection of 97 photos by the New York–based artist.

The photographs in the book were taken in major cities around the world, from New York and Los Angeles to Berlin, Paris and Hong Kong. … While some of the “Morning After” photos are landscapes, others offer voyeuristic views of gorgeous, well-dressed women.

“I like looking at things from the inside out and the outside in, so you get both,” he says. “We’re all voyeurs, aren’t we?”

First came another major commission for Conde Nast Traveler shot in Hong Kong, which became the backdrop as well as the main character of his two recent creations “Girl in Hong Kong” and “Hong Kong Lights” of which “Girl in Hong Kong” was chosen to be the cover image of the March issue. This commission followed his previous collaboration with Conde Nast when Drebin’s photograph “Girl in Orange Dress” (now completely sold out) was chosen to grace the cover of the landmark volume “Room with a View” published by Assouline.

Perhaps the most prominent accomplishment of 2010 is Drebin’s inclusion in Fashion! – a milestone group exhibition mounted by Fotografiska Museet in Stockholm, which provided an overview of the development of fashion photography from its beginning in 1920s to the present. Drebin’s participation in this exhibition placed him alongside such giants of contemporary photography as Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Horst P. Horst, Steven Meisel, Irving Penn and Annie Leibovitz.

In between the museum shows, participation in major art fairs and exhibitions all over the world, Drebin managed to also produce a number of new exciting works. Many of his dreamscapes, femme fatales and other epic scenes are featured in his second book entitled “The Morning After.” This monograph, published by teNeues, was officially premiered by Contessa Gallery at Art Miami 2010, boosting the already high demand for David’s works.

Drebin’s images reside “on the border between art and fashion photography”, writes Michelle Marie Roy, chief curator of photography at Fotografiska. “From exposure to print, he enthralls us with the style and wit of his visual stories. We live vicariously through his characters, and relish in the fantasy evoked by his images.”

It is this ability to capture the audience’s imagination that resulted in a major article on the art of David Drebin in the February 2011 issue of ARTnews magazine, one of the art world’s most respected publications. The four-page spread highlights some of Drebin’s best works, including “Champion,” 2009 exclusive to Contessa Gallery.

The second one-man show of David Drebin’s photography at Contessa Gallery is a celebration of the many accomplishments of this talented internationally successful photographer. It is also the ideal opportunity for collectors and admirers to view his newest works and meet David Drebin in person at the opening receptions/book signings.

.

Have you seen the February issue of Condé Nast Traveler? The venerable magazine is featuring David Drebin’s latest monograph, The Morning After (teNeues), as a must-have, describing it as “a book of dreamy cinematic images.” (To read more, go here.)

.

David Drebin's monograph "The Morning After" (left) is featured in the February 2011 issue of Condé Nast Traveler (right).

.

The February issue of ARTnews also features David’s photography. In an interview with him titled “Voyeurs, Flashers, and Ice-Hockey Players,” the magazine’s photo editor, Rebecca Robertson, praises David’s work for its “narrative mixture of grit, humor, and glamour,” as well as its ambiguity.

Here’s an excerpt:

.

In his cinematic world, beautiful women in very short skirts run up and down stairs, lean dangerously over balconies, or look out windows. The heart of his drama is often the tension of sexualized, occasionally hostile looking, with the camera peeking at a partially obscured woman. Sometimes Drebin records both the voyeur and his target, as in a 2001 Jeff Wall–like street scene set outside the Apollo Theater in Harlem. In it, a startled-looking woman wearing a midriff-baring shirt and holding her child is coolly appraised by a man walking behind her. Stalker (2007) suggests a more explicit threat—it shows a pair of bare female legs in short black boots standing on asphalt, framed by a dark slit as if seen through closed blinds.

For all the mystery in some of Drebin’s tableaux, many share a sense of mischievousness. In Flasher (2002), one of his most popular images, a woman on an overpass lifts her shirt to oncoming traffic. Ice Hockey (2002) shows a woman in leopard-print boots in a locker room arguing with a man wearing only black boxer briefs, while his underdressed teammates snicker.

.

"Apollo," 2001, by David Drebin.

"Flasher," 2002, by David Drebin.

"Champion," 2009, by David Drebin.

.

Sometimes Drebin’s locations are so evocative that he forgoes models. Yellow Pool (2001) is an empty swimming pool deck aglow in a wash of artificial light. Central Park (2006) looks north at night from high above the park—a dark trapezoid crisscrossed by strings of lighted paths and surrounded by the orange glow of the city. Drebin took the five-minute exposure from a friend’s office on the 57th floor of Carnegie Hall Tower.

“I like to go places people have photographed before and shoot them in a new way,” he says.

.

.

The Fahey/Klein Gallery is pleased to present a selection of color photographs from contemporary photographer, David Drebin’s new monograph, The Morning After (teNeues, 2010). This exhibition features murals of David Drebin’s vivid cityscapes and landscapes, as well as the beautiful, seductive women who inhabit these spaces. “Drebin, from exposure to print, enthralls us with the style and wit of his visual stories. We live vicariously through his characters, and relish in the fantasy evoked by his images.” (Michelle Marie Roy, The Morning After)

Using the luminous backdrop of cities such as Rio De Janiero, Hong Kong, San Francisco, Barcelona, New York, and Paris, Drebin elicits voyeuristic tendancies in his viewers. Living vicariously in the luxury of Drebin’s rich cinematic settings, the audience observes the glamorous sophisticates who portray an array of tales from lust to heartbreak.

Copies of David Drebin’s new publication, The Morning After, published by teNeues, 2010, are available at the Fahey/Klein Gallery.

We’re thrilled to report that David Drebin’s new monograph, The Morning After, is being issued in January by teNeues, and the venerable art-book publisher will be celebrating it with a book launch in Berlin this week. The launch coincides with a solo exhibition of David’s photographs, also titled “The Morning After,” at Camera Work on Friday, November 27. Congratulations, David!

.

.

Here’s what teNeues is saying about David and The Morning After:

.

“A talented photographer without equal, David Drebin is above all a storyteller. His brooding and glamorous works tells tales of lust and voyeurism—as well as seduction and escape. Not afraid to be daring, Drebin also tantalizes us with subtle allusions. His sweeping cinematic images feature the majestic backdrops of such world cities as Berlin, Paris and Rio de Janeiro. These photographs pulse with a charged sensuality, using color and light to maximum effect. Dangerous seductresses play a central role in Drebin’s work. Bursts of saturated Technicolor explode against stone and gray cement. In this, he hints at Hitchcock at his finest. We’re left with a tinge of regret amid the sensual excess…”

.

David’s previous monographs include Love and Other Stories, published by Daab, and Dreamscapes & Girls, a selection of his work from 2000 to 2009. The Morning After—a 192-page tome published in English, French, German, and Spanish—features the following essay by Michelle Marie Roy, chief curator of photography at the Fotografiska museum in Stockholm, which is currently featuring David’s images in the exhibition “Fashion!”:

.

“David Drebin’s photographs are reminiscent of the allure of the silver screen. His images depict storylines dramatized against the backdrop of urban landscapes. Intimate relationships are suggested by the gestures of the characters we meet suspended in each film still. Beauty and heartbreak often intermingle in narratives that are left to the viewer’s imagination to sort out. It is as if we have walked into the cinema halfway through the feature film. Drebin’s work is edgy, intensely detailed, and ripe with deeply saturated colors. His photographs can be categorized into close-ups, panoramas, tableaus, and interiors. Land-and cityscapes make up Drebin’s vivid panoramas. From breathtaking dark seas reflecting city lights, to sand beaches lined with palms, to the haze of a sparkling metropolis, the panoramas draw us into the glamorous milieu of jet-setting sophisticates.

Drebin’s narratives are often centralized around women. Reminiscent of the surveillance of paparazzi, his photographs allow us a glimpse into the secret lives of these fashionistas. The characters are femme fatales, who are gorgeous and strong willed. Despite the single frame of the image, he manages to convey complex emotions inherent to each personality. Beyond designer dresses and rouge, his characters are often caught up in some intrigue, as seen in his series of women photographing each other. The voyeuristic gaze is two-fold. Is this a play on vanity or feminine rivalry? Like a tabloid devotee, we long to uncover the details of the drama.

The Morning After is a collection of images that reside on the border between art and fashion photography. Drebin, from exposure to print, enthralls us with the style and wit of his visual stories. We live vicariously through his characters, and relish in the fantasy evoked by his images.”
