Creative Review issues its new Photography Annual

The November issue of Britain’s Creative Review is also its Photography Annual, with 85 of its 196 pages featuring work singled out for recognition by the magazine’s editors. Among those chosen for this year’s photo annual is Nadav Kander, for his portrait of rapper Tinie Tempah, originally taken for The Observer (see more here).

We have some fantastic selected work this year including images from the likes of Nadav Kander, Dean Chalkley, Nick Meek Julia Fullerton-Batten and many, many more. Sandy Nairne, director of the National Portrait Gallery in London, wrote about Nadav Kander‘s work in a short essay appearing yesterday in the Guardian. Here’s an excerpt:

Kander prefers a certain distance from his subject, not seeking like the Edwardian modernist EO Hoppé or Annie Leibovitz to do extensive research, but opting for riskier interaction on the spot. “I like to create a void between myself and the person I’m photographing, where anything can happen… I remain quite empty, so that whatever happens at first happens with the camera trained on them.”

You seem to be shooting more and more music work—most recently for the Take That album, are you a big music fan?

When I was a kid we would hang out at each others houses and play records, and if someone had an impressive collection it would take up about 6 foot of space – a massive collection would be 2 sofas long and have taken 5 years at least to lovingly collect. It was in the days before music was churned out quickly for an insatiable public thirst. Nowadays most people would have twice this amount on an iPod. I loved savouring what I had and discovering every little nuance the vinyl had to offer.

New work: Nadav Kander’s portraits of British rapper Tinie Tempah

Tinie Tempah may not be a household name here in the States just yet, but give him time. The London rapper is the odds-on favorite to sweep the top categories at tomorrow’s BRIT Awards, where he’s nominated for Best Single, Best Breakthrough Act, Best Male Solo Artist, and Album of the Year.

TT, whose chart-topping album, Disco-Overy, will hit this side of the pond on May 3, made his Stateside TV debut on the February 2 broadcast of Jimmy Kimmel Live. In the meantime, his fame only continues to grow in Britain, and with the awards show coming up, The Observer commissioned Nadav Kander to photograph the 22-year-old rapper for this past Sunday’s magazine. Here’s the image they used on the cover:
