Grey announces new division dedicated to health-related advertising

In a limping economy, when downsizing or going bust are the norm, it’s uplifting to hear that a company is expanding. Grey announced today that it is adding a new global division “that will specialize in advertising for health-related products and services — not only prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications, but also anything intended to promote the health and well-being of consumers,” reports Stuart Elliott of The New York Times.

The name of the division is Grey Healthy People. “The foundation of the new division will be accounts with billings estimated at $500 million that are already handled by Grey, for health care marketers like Allergan, Bausch & Lomb, Boehringer Ingelheim, GlaxoSmithKline, Eli Lilly and Pfizer. There are more than 30 brands involved, including well-known names like Aquafresh, Botox, Cialis, Flomax, Juvederm, Preparation H, Robitussin and Tums,” writes Elliott. Full article here.

New work: Tom Rafalovich shoots “Fresh Air & Fun!” feature for Self

To kick off summer, Self produced a beginner’s guide to some of the great outdoor activities that are especially fun to do in the warm sunshine, like kayaking, surfing, hiking, and rock climbing. Because the story is aimed at women who are new to these sports, the photos needed to feel inviting while also being accurate down to the last detail.

The magazine commissioned Tom Rafalovich, who regularly shoots for clients like Eddie Bauer—whose customers are focused on how the gear and garb on display perform—to shoot the story. Tom worked with Self art director Lida Moore and shot in Santa Barbara.

“The model, Ally, was a beginner at all these pursuits,” explains Tom. “The idea of the story is to make these outdoor activities, which can be intimidating, look fun and accessible.”

SMart Book 2011, our latest photo annual, is now online!

Earlier this year, we threw a big party to celebrate the release of SMart Book 2011, our latest limited-edition collectible photo annual, which we printed with three different covers—by Lauren Greenfield, Roxanne Lowit, and Liz Von Hoene. And now, we’re happy to announce, the book is available to view online at issuu.com.

The concept for this year’s book is SMart Words. Here’s how Bill and Maureen explained it in the introduction:

We’re strong believers in the principle that every photographer has to have a distinct point of view. As we were conceptualizing this year’s limited-edition SMart photo annual, we thought a lot about what our photographers stand for and who they are. And that’s how we arrived at SMart Words. Can a talent be summed up in three to seven words? We wonder what you think. —Bill Stockland and Maureen Martel

Spotlight: Tom Rafalovich

Photographers have to be adaptable, but good photographers know how to take even ordinary situations and make them look terrific. For lifestyle and fashion photographer Tom Rafalovich, this means making you feel like you’re right in the action, whether it’s a muddy bike race, a sprawling family dinner, or a day at the beach.

When he’s not on a shoot, Rafalovich—who is as much a sportsman as he is a photographer—is likely to be mountain biking in Moab, Whistler, or even on a favorite trail a 10-minute ride from his home in Santa Monica. “I’m an equal opportunity mountain biker,” he says. He’s just as open-minded about fly-fishing, which he took up as a teenager. The sport tends to inspire a kind of pretentiousness, as if it were a club for select members only, but that’s not Rafalovich’s style. He has his prized fishing spots, but he can also more than make do with whatever’s available.

“Wyoming is one of my favorites because it’s still on of the few places you can go and be on your own, away from the crowds. I’ll hike three miles into a canyon, cross the rapids, and hike some more just to get to a place that I can fish and not see a wet boot print from another fisherman all day,” he says. “I’m not a fishing snob, though. When I feel the urge, I’ll fish in the local mountains outside L.A., leapfrogging campers, garbage, and other fisherman—and have a blast. Once you step into the river, it’s just you and the trout.”
