In addition to fronting the chart-topping group Florence and the Machine, the towering, flame-haired Florence Welch has become a muse for the fashion world. And no wonder—she cuts quite a compelling figure. Any photographer would be thrilled to shoot her, but for a feature in the new issue of Rolling Stone, creative director Jodi Peckman chose Nadav Kander. “I was tired of seeing ‘fashion’ photos of her and wanted to do the opposite,” Jodi explained to me in an email. “I couldn’t think of anything that could possibly top a Nadav Kander portrait of her!”

The portrait above, which Nadav shot in London, accompanied a feature by Vanessa Grigoriadis titled “Florence and the Witch: How the arty, ethereal Florence Welch became the Stevie Nicks of the ‘Twilight’ generation.”

International Photography Awards winners announced

.The jurors of the 2011 International Photography Awards have named their selections for subcategory and category winners, and we’re ecstatic that Kwaku Alston, Matthias Clamer, Nadav Kander, and John Offenbach are among their favorites. Our congratulations to them and to their fellow winners. Well done!

“Category winners,” the IPA’s site explains, “will move on as finalists competing for the Photographer of the Year (professional) and the Discovery of the Year (emerging) titles, as well as that of Deeper Perspective Photographer of the Year.” Those winners will be announced at the Lucie Awards on October 24 at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

New work: Nadav Kander shoots Werner Herzog for GQ

Werner Herzog is the subject of a big feature in the May issue of GQ, and the magazine commissioned Nadav Kander to make a portrait of the famed German director to accompany the article. Herzog’s latest film, which just came out in limited release, is a 3D documentary—titled Cave of Forgotten Dreams—on an expedition to France’s remote Chauvet Cave, which houses some of the most ancient cave paintings and which is nearly impossible to access.

Not familiar with Herzog, who directed Grizzly Man, among other uncommon films? The magazine introduces the piece, irreverently titled “Mad German Auteur—Now in 3-D!”, this way:

“The daring German filmmaker Werner Herzog once walked a thousand miles to propose to a woman. He once plotted to firebomb his leading man’s house and once ate his own shoe to square a bet. He once got shot in the stomach during a TV interview, then insisted on finishing. And despite it all, his latest adventure—a 3-D documentary about cave paintings—still sounds batshit crazy. Chris Heath goes spelunking deep inside the mind of modern cinema’s oddest icon.”
