Craig Cutler and John Offenbach each win a Gold from Graphis

Graphis has just announced the winners of its annual “100 Best in Photography 2012,” and we’re proud to note that Craig Cutler and John Offenbach have been honored with Gold awards. Congratulations to both of you!

John won in the “Single Corporate” category for two images from a campaign he shot for EDF Energy. These are screenshots of his work from Graphis’ online winners’ gallery:

And Craig won in the Still Life, Corporate, and Journalism categories—including for two photos from his ambitious CC52 series. Craig has worked hard on CC52 and really pushed himself, creatively and time-wise, and we’re so happy to see his dedication rewarded. (By the way, the yearlong CC52 project comes to an end on March 29, and plans are being made for a multimedia exhibition of the work. Watch this space for details.) But back to Graphis—here are screenshots of Craig’s winning images:

Lauren Greenfield wins directing award for “Queen of Versailles”

Congratulations to Lauren Greenfield, who at the Sundance Film Festival last night was presented with the U.S. Directing Award for Documentary for her film The Queen of Versailles. “I want to especially thank Jackie Segal and her family for bravely sticking with the story when it changed in unexpected ways,” Lauren said in her acceptance speech. She also thanked the team at the Sundance Documentary Program, “who saw a social-issue film where others saw a reality show.”

The film’s synopsis:

With the epic dimensions of a Shakespearean tragedy, The Queen of Versailles follows billionaires Jackie and David’s rags-to-riches story to uncover the innate virtues and flaws of the American dream. We open on the triumphant construction of the biggest house in America, a sprawling, 90,000-square-foot mansion inspired by Versailles. Since a booming time-share business built on the real-estate bubble is financing it, the economic crisis brings progress to a halt and seals the fate of its owners. We witness the impact of this turn of fortune over the next two years in a riveting film fraught with delusion, denial, and self-effacing humor. As we noted last week, Magnolia Pictures purchased The Queen of Versailles, and The Hollywood Reporter indicates the film will be released in theaters this summer. “The Queen of Versailles brilliantly encapsulates the salient issues of the American economic downturn, while also being one of the jaw-droppingly entertaining films I’ve seen in a very long time,” Magnolia president Eamonn Bowles said in a statement quoted by THR. “Lauren Greenfield is an exceptionally talented filmmaker with a wonderfully humanistic touch, and she has found a truly magnetic, charismatic star in Jackie Siegel.” (Read more: “Sundance 2012: Magnolia Buys ‘Queen Of Versailles’ Documentary.”)

Lauren Greenfield‘s photo of models backstage at a 2010 Prada fashion show in Milan is on view through October 31 in the exhibit “Pictures of the Year,” at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. The show, explains the museum’s site, celebrates “the year’s best news images.” Lauren’s photo is from her “Fashion Week” story, which Pictures of the Year International honored with an Award of Excellence earlier this year in the Feature Picture Story category.

John Midgley and Jan Steinhilber honored by AOP Photographers Awards

Britain’s AOP (Association of Photographers) announced the winners of its 28th annual Photographers Awards, and we’re pleased to congratulate honorees John Midgley and Jan Steinhilber. John was awarded in two categories: Commissioned Advertising Single, for his portrait of Oscar-winning actor John Lithgow, and Commissioned Editorial Series, for his portraits of NYC artisans for Men’s Journal. Jan, meanwhile, was honored in the Non-Commissioned Project category for his ongoing personal series on birds and other feathered creatures.

Communication Arts releases its 2011 Photography Annual

The competition was intense for Communication Arts‘ 2011 Photography Annual, with more than 5,000 entries vying for the approbation of the five-member jury. Among the 166 winners were three of our photographers: Nadav Kander, Art Streiber, and Liz Von Hoene, whose winning images are posted below. (Full gallery here.) International Photography Awards winners announced

.The jurors of the 2011 International Photography Awards have named their selections for subcategory and category winners, and we’re ecstatic that Kwaku Alston, Matthias Clamer, Nadav Kander, and John Offenbach are among their favorites. Our congratulations to them and to their fellow winners. Well done!

“Category winners,” the IPA’s site explains, “will move on as finalists competing for the Photographer of the Year (professional) and the Discovery of the Year (emerging) titles, as well as that of Deeper Perspective Photographer of the Year.” Those winners will be announced at the Lucie Awards on October 24 at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Corbis Silver Iris Competition honors John Midgley’s Brooklyn Circus project

John Midgley and his Brooklyn Circus project were honored in the 2011 Silver Iris Competition, sponsored by Corbis and Creative Review. The brief for the contest was “Urbanization,” and the judges were looking for “imagery inspired by the common consciousness of urban dwellers” as well as “the personality of the city itself.” John was one of the competition’s three winners (the others were Michael Whelan and Alex Bland).

“John Midgley’s series takes us back in time,” the judges wrote, “and also reminds us that our vibrant urban culture has been growing for quite some time. The real-feel aesthetic grabbed our attention but it was the cast and detail in the styling that impressed us most.”

PromaxBDA honors NBC and Art Streiber for “30 Rock,” “UnderCovers,” and “Parenthood” campaigns

Doug Menuez and Matthias Clamer among the winners in PDN Faces contest

PDN has announced the winners of its 2011 Faces portrait competition with a big gallery section in the August issue. The contest is among the most popular sponsored by the magazine, so you can just imagine how many entries were competing for the admiration of the four judges: Jade-Snow Moy Joachim, who is a photo editor at The New York Times; Manuela Oprea, an assistant photo editor at Bloomberg Markets magazine; Zana Woods, senior photo editor of Wired; and photo marketing and portfolio consultant Neil Binkley.

Among the winners in the Celebrity/Editorial Portraits category were Matthias Clamer, for his photos of Tina Fey and Steve Carell, taken for Parade magazine when the movie Date Night was coming out; and Doug Menuez, whose portraits of Cate Blanchett and Hugh Jackman are from the body of work he produced while documenting the series Iconoclasts for the Sundance Channel.
