Lauren Greenfield wins Grand Prize in PDN’s The Look fashion-photography contest

We’re thrilled to announce that PDN has awarded Lauren Greenfield the Grand Prize in the Runway category in its inaugural fashion-photography contest, The Look—Where Fashion Meets Art. As the editors noted in their introduction to the winners gallery, “Fashion photography is a genre admired by many but practiced by few.” Lauren, who was honored for her photos of the spring 2010 runway shows, was also awarded a Milk Studios prize package worth $5,000.

The judges for The Look were Vince Aletti, adjunct curator, Year of Fashion ICP & curator,
2010 New York Photo Festival; Hali Tara Friehling, senior photo editor, Details; Jennifer Kim, senior photo producer, Teen Vogue; Nadine McCarthy, photo director, Allure; Mazdack Rassi, creative director and managing partner, The Milk Group; Jed Root, founder, Jed Root Inc.; fashion photographer Matthew Jordan Smith; and Steven Torres, photo editor, Style.com/Conde Nast Digital. (Learn more about them here.)

It’s been something of a banner year for Lauren. She is one of only eight photographers selected for the major exhibition “Engaged Observers: Documentary Photography Since the Sixties,” on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles through November 14. Her work was chosen for the Smithsonian publication The Changing Face of Portrait Photography: From Daguerreotype to Digital, by Shannon Perich, associate curator of the Photographic History Collection at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History (the book is scheduled for publication in 2011). And, as reported at the blog published by INSTITUTE (which represents Lauren’s editorial work; Stockland Martel is Lauren’s rep for commercial work), this past summer the Getty and the Smithsonian acquired prints from three of Lauren’s series: “Fast Forward,” “Girl Culture,” and “THIN.”

Lauren, who is a frequent lecturer at museums and universities around the country, will be giving a talk on October 4 at the Santa Fe Art Institute on October 4. She’ll also be giving a lecture and screening her film kids + money on September 26 at the Getty Center in L.A., followed by a book signing. (Seating is limited. You can RSVP here.) Lauren is one of those rare photographers who are as illuminating in person as they are behind the camera. If you haven’t seen her speak about her work, these are good opportunities.
