New work: Uwe Duettmann’s David Lynch–inspired fashion story for Gala magazine

It started as a personal project. Uwe Duettmann envisioned shooting a fashion story with the enigmatic appeal of David Lynch‘s cultishly adored film Mulholland Drive. His plan was to fly in from his native Germany to shoot on location in Los Angeles, collaborating with stylist Christiane Graf, hair and makeup artist Agnesha Kollien, 1st assistant Benni Bock, and Eric Locke of lockemotion. And then Gala, one of Germany’s bestselling weekly magazines, got wind of the project and offered to buy it. And here’s how it turned out…

Opening next month: “Nadav Kander: Selected Portraits, 1999–2011″

“Nadav Kander: Selected Portraits, 1999–2011,” featuring photos that have never before been exhibited, is opening on April 16 at the Lowry Museum in Manchester, England. The show, on view through September 4, will include portraits of the famous—such as Lily Allen, Spike Jonze, David Lynch, Boy George, Michael Stipe, and Ian McKellen—as seen through Kander’s uniquely interpretive gaze.

“My main intention when photographing celebrities is making work that is unique and personal to that human being,” he says in the exhibition’s press release, “even when the person in front of you has a fixed idea of how he or she wants to be portrayed.”

New in Editorial: Eli Broad art party and “white-collar wives” get the Greenfield treatment

Billionaire art collector and philanthropist Eli Broad recently hosted a dinner in honor of the 40th anniversary of Art Basel, and Lauren Greenfield was on hand to document the starry event for W magazine. Among those on the guest list: David Lynch, Cindy Sherman, Benedikt Taschen. Greenfield’s photos, plus the complete story, can be found here.

Meanwhile, over in the crocodile-tears department, Marie Claire did a feature on the plight of women whose husbands have been imprisoned for fraud. Women like Bernadette Noe, who was forced to move into her $5 million winter vacation home in Key Largo. Yes, it’s very, very sad. Marie Claire contributing editor Gretchen Voss handles the story with admirable grace and minimal snark, and Greenfield approaches the photography with her signature curiosity and open-mindedness.
