Cosmetics brand collaborates with Erik Madigan Heck on a new collection

Erik Madigan Heck is known for his collaborations with fashion designers—Mary Katrantzou, Ann Demeulemeester, and others—but one of his latest projects puts an especially innovative spin on the concept of artist as muse. Cosmetics brand Make recently created a new collection based on Erik’s work—and their inspiration was not his fashion photos but his original abstract landscapes. The line is called Post-Impression.

“I love seeing my work go into different realms physically, so to see a landscape image turned into a lipstick is pretty amazing,” Erik told Britain’s Disegno magazine. Read more here. Below, a look at some of his landscapes with his photos of women wearing the cosmetics those images inspired…

The new edition of British design magazine Disegno, which just came out, contains an extensive feature on Erik Madigan Heck‘s five photographic collaborations with Greek fashion designer Mary Katrantzou. The article includes a conversation between the two and showcases all their projects—“Surreal Planes: Fall/Winter 2011,” spring/summer 2012, “The Surrealist Ideal,” spring/summer 2013, and “Cathedrals”— together in print for the first time. The magazine can be purchased at newsstands or at Disegno‘s website.

W is known for publishing stunning, high-production photography by the industry’s top shooters, but the magazine is taking a decidedly more casual tack with its new “Point of View” feature: Visionary photographers are invited to submit a handful of personal, unpublished photos for publication in the Art & Culture section of W‘s website. New York magazine debuts exclusive portfolio by Erik Madigan Heck. Plus: a video interview with Erik

New York magazine’s TheCut recently commissioned Erik Madigan Heck to shoot an exclusive portfolio based on the fall/winter collections. Erik’s response was to present a new perspective on fashion—one that challenges the way we experience the clothing and the very notion of how it is presented. For the project, which debuts today at the magazine’s website, he shot highlights from the collections from behind, erasing the face.

“So much of what we see today is concerned with the face—with celebrity, with the politics of a person and their endorsement,” says Erik. “I wanted to create a project that refocused our attention on the most basic elements of what I believe fashion and art are truly concerned with: color, form, texture, and seeing into a space beyond ourselves. My work aims to highlight elements we can all relate to and witness through a similar lens. For me, fashion is merely another mode to understand our relationship with beauty’s transcendent qualities.”

Comprising 14 images, “Without a Face” is accompanied by a short film—directed by John Carlucci for Tribeca Film—that offers an intimate look at Erik’s working practices and inspiration.

Many thanks to Suzanne Sease for her terrific interview with Erik Madigan Heck in today’s “Art Producers Speak” column at A Photo Editor. Erik was nominated to appear in Suzanne’s column by an art buyer, who told Suzanne, “I had the pleasure to meet him over a year ago. He has such a thoughtful process and is really going places.”
