Erik Madigan Heck has once again collaborated with celebrated young fashion designer Mary Katrantzou, this time on a collection of photographs influenced by early Parisian Surrealist painters (the spirit of Chagall, for example, can be felt in the image above), Catholic iconography, and Greek mythology. “The Surrealist Ideal,” which comprises 14 works, makes its debut today in the pages of the art journal Nomenus Quarterly. The photographs are also on view at Erik’s site, maisondesprit.com.

Here’s the official press release:

Mary Katrantzou Fall/Winter 2012, “The Surrealist Ideal,”

14 new artworks by Erik Madigan Heck

2 April 2012

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“For me, the circus is a magical show, like a world that comes into being and then is gone again.” Marc Chagall

The third consecutive collaboration between Mary Katrantzou and Erik Madigan Heck marks a stylistic and conceptual departure from the previous two collections of photographs released in 2011- with an attempt at entering a truly surreal and bizarre world. In this new series, Mary’s clothing and Erik’s photographs converge as 14 disparate, yet collective works- heavily referencing early Parisian Surrealist painters, Catholic iconography, and Greek mythology. The result is a beautiful and new look at how fashion imagery can morph into new creative realms.

‘The Surrealist Ideal’ attempts to follow a non-linear story revolving around fantasies and dreams, begun with Mary’s prints in her fall-winter collection, and expanded upon in these 14 works. The images are created both as straight photographs, as well as with applied painting- first created in studio, as expansive sets where the models have literally been hoisted in the air in front of the camera and transformed into a dream state.

To see more of the series, please visit Nomenus Quarterly, where they exist in their full format as an exclusive release for the 13th installment of the online art journal.
