Interior Design editor-in-chief Cindy Allen invites Matthew Rolston to speak at exclusive Giants of Design conference

Cindy Allen, editor in chief of Interior Design—which is to the design industry what Vogue is to fashion—launched the magazine’s first-ever conference earlier this month: Giants of Design, an event dedicated to “high-level thought leadership and learning…beyond the immediate boundaries of interior design, focusing on global ideas, culture, the arts, innovation, technology, communication, creativity, design intelligence, and the future.”

Among the industry leaders she invited to speak at the conference, which took place March 12 to 14 at the Parker Palm Springs in California, was Matthew Rolston, who in addition to photography and directing has moved into the area of experiential design, including hospitality, product design, and new media ventures.

Matthew’s presentation included an informal conversation with Cindy about his life and work. Matthew presented a selection of his photographs and commercials, and he screened a short documentary about the Redbury, a boutique hotel at Hollywood and Vine in Los Angeles for which he served as creative director. (Matthew was the creative director for LOLA, too, the former historic Martha Washington Residence for Women in New York City’s Gramercy Park neighborhood that made its debut as a hip luxe hotel this year.) When asked how he would define his design sensibility, he replied, “I’m a romantic and a sensualist.”

Matthew also took the opportunity to offer some words of inspiration. “Never put yourself in a box,” he told the audience. “The job listed on your business card doesn’t have to define you.”
