John Offenbach’s South Florida

While on holiday with his family on Marco Island this month, John Offenbach produced a series of images that capture the serenity and mystique of the tropical island. His photos, a selection of which you see here, suggest that there’s a serene alternative to nearby Miami’s flashy beach scene. South Florida never looked so enigmatic.

Ogilvy creative director on the making of IBM’s “A Smarter Planet” campaign

IBM recently launched a campaign called “A Smarter Planet,” centering on the idea that the systems that run the way we live are increasingly becoming interconnected and “intelligent.” For the creative team at Ogilvy & Mather, the agency of record, the challenge in executing the campaign was coming up with imagery that would vividly illustrate [...]

Who will fund the future of photojournalism?

PDN has published a lengthy Q&A with Stephen Mayes, the managing director of the photo agency VII, about the future of photojournalism—who the clients will be, whether the editorial and newspaper markets will become viable again, what the channels of distribution will be, and more. An excerpt:

SM: I think the online opportunity is huge. What [...]

Next stop, Dubailand

…….

…….
Earlier this month, I noted that the September issue of Fast Company features a 15-page photo essay by Lauren Greenfield on Dubailand, but at the time, we weren’t able to post the images. The embargo has passed now, though, so I’m reposting the item, complete with links to the article.
Dubailand is a $66 billion project [...]

Whose influence are you under?

The art magazine Frieze publishes an ongoing feature called “Idea Syllabus” in which it asks curators, artists, and writers to list the books that have influenced them. Reading through some of the previous lists, which are posted at Frieze’s website, I marveled at the breadth of authors and ideas highlighted.
There are some artworld-related tomes—German artist [...]

At Photo Shelter’s blog A Picture’s Worth, D.A. Wagner, who shoots tabletop still life, explains what motivated him to hire a consultant and what the process of working with her was like. Basically, he found her advice and the experience as a whole indispensable. He doesn’t indicate whether he got leads or jobs as a [...]

Behind the scenes of the Men’s Health redesign

Design director Brandon Kavulla is overseeing a redesign of Men’s Health, and he’s offering a behind-the-scenes look at the process over at Grids, the official blog of the Society of Publication Designers. The goal of the redesign, Kavulla explains, is “to simplify things and focus on great imagery and simple but expressive typography.”
Conceptual photography seems [...]

10 photography pet peeves

The photo department at Wired magazine has posted a top-10 list of their most despised photography pet peeves. Making the list? Stuff like HDR photos, shutter lag, the megapixel debate (“‘How many megapixels does that camera have?’ We don’t know, and we really don’t care. The real question is: Can you make a picture with [...]

Nadav Kander’s Orbit campaign gets us all Misty

You’ve probably seen Nadav’s campaign for Orbit Mist chewing gum. It’s kind of hard, after all, to miss ads that alternately feature a chic woman in a black umbrella dress, a rosy-lipped guy in a shower-curtain suit, and a seraphic redhead wearing a frock made of a shaggy mop. Creativity recently spotlighted the campaign, which [...]

What it’s like working for Jay Maisel

….
Jamie Smith, Jay Maisel’s assistant, recently wrote about what it’s like working for the prolific, award-winning lensman—what his job duties are, how he became an assistant, how he met Jay, and his advice for aspiring assistants. His candid, self-deprecating account amounts to a mini-career-counseling session for those entering the photo business. A sample:
“There is no [...]
