The view from room 1211, the Standard hotel, NYC

From the September 2009 issue of Conde Nast Traveler. Photo by David Drebin.

If Edward Hopper had taken a sabbatical in L.A. and bathed every day in gloss and glamour without shedding any of his sense of solitude. If he’d taken photos instead of making paintings. If he’d come to New York and been asked to shoot the view from room 1211 of the window-full Standard hotel—the view of the High Line park and the Hudson River on the west side of downtown Manhattan—for Conde Nast Traveler. If all of those things had been the case, I’ll bet this is the photograph he would have taken. David Drebin took this picture, and I dare say there’s even a little Christina’s World there in the woman’s pose. Though I’m pretty sure nobody dressed that way in Wyeth country.
