Shoko's photo of Roxanne with her classic portrait of the original supermodels, the first image you saw you when you entered Art Photo Expo.
This past Monday in Soho, a velvet rope was set up outside the Art Photo Expo gallery on West Broadway, and a carpet—yes, a red one—led into the exhibition space. The occasion: a show featuring the “Masters of Fashion Photography.” Arthur Elgort, Helmut Newton, Michael Thompson, Roxanne Lowit, and many more. The walls were hung with large-scale images of exotic creatures, male and female, and the multi-floor exhibition space was filled with many of the same.
On the second-floor mezzanine, I found Roxanne taking in the scene with her friend Craig. Later, Shoko, who works in her studio, would take some photos of Roxanne next to her images. But for now, Roxanne seemed content to stay at her perch, cheerfully watching the action. Standing on the first floor, I caught her reflection in the glass. The observer being observed.
