Tom Rafalovich is always going on some sort of outdoor adventure—biking, fishing, surfing, and the like—and he often builds personal photo projects around those activities. So I asked him to send me some of his recent work. Here’s what he emailed me:
“For the surf story [photos 1 and 2 below] we wanted to capture the energy and youth of a group of teenagers in surf clothes, but without the beach. We chose a surf shack in Malibu, and the stylist pulled some beachy, somewhat retro clothes that had style but were fun. The art director and I then gave the models a location for context and let them be free to play. I am happy with the images we got because they show the clothes and the models well, but the focus is their interaction and energy.
The Fall images were for a job where the client wanted to show their clothes in a majestic environment. It was exciting to shoot a fashion story that was not clothes driven. We shot all around Jackson, Wyoming, using the fall colors, rivers, fence lines, mountains, and barns for inspiration and to lend the clothes a lifestyle.”
Thanks, Tom!
