What’s your workspace like?

I just read that the November issue of Creative Review will be devoted to the workplace. The question they want to explore is whether it matters anymore where one is based—do you have to live in a big city if you want to make it in advertising or graphic design?

For purely voyeuristic purposes, they also want to know what kind of setup people have created for themselves. “Do you favour the clinical white cube,” they ask, “or a more chaotic, personalised space? Do you surround yourself with inspiration, or cut yourself off from distractions?”

For instant gratification, you can check out the Flickr group the magazine has created so that people can upload photos of their workspace. The most interesting ones will be featured in the November issue. I’m fond of this one because it’s thoroughly annotated:

For our photo annual a couple of years ago, I asked the Stockland Martel photographers questions like “What’s on your desk?” and, we printed their answers in list form with their selection of images. It was a fun way to get to know the person a bit and spared everyone having to read stuffy bio text. Now that we have the blog, I think it’d be interesting to invite readers to submit a photo of their workspace or studio. So consider yourself invited. Thanks for posting my pic. Glad you like the annotations. Seeing all the views it’s received recently has shamed me into tidying it up today!
