Lauren Greenfield documents “gay retirement”

Lauren—who will be speaking at the University of Texas, Austin, on Nov. 20 as part of the Austin Center for Photography’s Icons of Photography (details here)—has posted some terrific new work at her website: “RainbowVision” offers a look at one of the first American retirement communities catering to middle-income homosexuals. It’s located in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and opened in 2006.

Fat Power and gay rights advocate Judith Masur moved into RainbowVision after the death of her partner of 18 years.

Heterosexuals have also happily taken up residence at RainbowVision, perhaps because it seems like a much more fun place to live than your typical retirement community. RainbowVision’s SilverStarlight Lounge, for instance, hosts saucy-sounding evenings such as “Where the Boys Are.” Not losing your sense of fun and love for life even at an advanced age: Wow, that’s almost more revolutionary than a retirement community for gays.
