Jim Marshall to USA Today: “Match Prints” showcases “spooky” similarities

USA Today has published an interview with Timothy White and Jim Marshall about their new book, Match Prints, which pairs a selection of their celebrity portraits from over the years. Writer Marco R. della Cava describes the collection as a photo book that makes you think—”…about composition. About style. About friendship.”

And based on the article, the process of making the 208-page book was thought-provoking for the photographers, too. “We were like two kids going, ‘Hey, I shot so-and-so, did you?’” White told della Cava.

“It was fun, and some of the paired images were just spooky,” Marshall said, mentioning the spread below, which features his 1963 portrait of Shelley Winters (left) and White’s 1991 portrait of Shirley Maclaine.

Veteran music writer Anthony DeCurtis penned the book’s introduction, and he shared an interesting observation about the two lensmen. “Jim is a wild guy, full of bluster,” he told della Cava, “while Tim is much smoother and pragmatic. But between them there’s almost a father-son relationship.”
