A couple of months ago in Oklahoma City, Walter shot Kobe Bryant for the cover of the June 28 issue of Sports Illustrated, though it’s far from being the first time he’s photographed the Los Angeles Lakers star.
“I have shot him since he came into the league 14 years ago,” Walter told me. “He was 17 then.”

The photo does, however, mark an important first: It will be the first SI cover on the iPad, Walter says, when the magazine launches its inaugural electronic issue this week.
