Luca Zordan teaches photography to schoolchildren in Kenya

Luca recently returned from Kenya, where he spent three weeks teaching photography to schoolchildren, using digital cameras donated by Nikon. The kids also had the chance to learn computer skills, thanks to the Help Kenya Project, a Westchester, New York–based charity that ships used computers, books, clothing, sports equipment, and other supplies to Kenyan schools and libraries. “In return, we ask that the recipients plant trees to combat deforestation and provide children with a place to rest and play out of the sun.” (More details at their website, hkenyaproject.org.)

Here are some photos Luca sent me from his trip…

Following the success of the “Children of South Africa” benefit here in New York in June, which featured Luca’s photographs from the book of the same name, Johannesburg hosted an exhibition and auction this past week. The Buskaid Soweto String Project, founded by Rosemary Nalden in 1997 to nurture and instruct aspiring young musicians, performed at the opening. Here are a couple of Luca’s photos of Rosemary’s students…

Luca tells me there will be another exhibition of his Children of South Africa photos in October in London. More details on that as I get them.

Thank you Luca for the remarkable piece of work you did in Kenya. The education these Kenyan students learned is a lifetime experience. I have met alot of the students who were previllaged to be tought by you, and all are extremely grateful for the experience. Because of it, I found that they are now able to photogragh school events and share their work with both teachers and other students.
Thank you for suppporting Help Kenya Project.
