New work: Erik Madigan Heck photographs Gabriel Orozco for “Artist as Muse” series

The third installment in Erik Madigan Heck‘s “The Artist as Muse” series for A Magazine features Gabriel Orozco, whom Erik photographed at the artist’s West Village apartment. Orozco makes scultpures, photographs, and installations that use “the urban landscape and the everyday objects found within it to twist conventional notions of reality and engage the imagination of the viewer”—description borrowed from PBSArt21 documentary on Orozco—and Erik’s photos of him and his environs are similarly visceral. They’re not so much a corporeal portrait as an intuitive one.

“I wanted the photographs to be an impression of the moment with Gabriel, a series of casual photographs of his garden, and him smoking and talking with me,” Erik explains in A. “The ‘Artist as Muse’ series has really become a documentation of conversations now, rather than the photographs being the end result. Gabriel put on a few different looks that he wanted to model to bring a sort of fashion element to the shoot. But, in the end it just became about him and his garden, and the intimacy of documenting a conversation and moment.”
