The appealing new Jonathan Adler catalog announces that it’s here to make your life “glamorous, comfortable and chic,” and that’s exactly how we’d describe the images—created by Melanie Acevedo—that grace its pages. Melanie has worked with Jonathan before, photographing him and his husband, Simon Doonan, at their Shelter Island, New York, home for Vanity Fair, and she understands what he’s after.
“Jonathan is involved in every aspect of his work. It is, after all, his vision of the world that he is putting out there, his original point of view, so he was very involved in the shooting and planning process,” she explains. “He was very open with me about what he likes and doesn’t like and what he wanted—how he sees his identity and how he doesn’t.”
Melanie shot the assignment on Shelter Island, working closely with Jonathan and even photographing some of the images at his house. “He was always with us on set but was incredibly generous with letting us explore ideas we may have come up with,” says Melanie, who also worked with the creative team 3+ Collective, “who are an AMAZING group of women.”
This was the first time Melanie has worked with Annette Berry, Brynn Johnson, and Suzi Jones of 3+ Collective, who have this to report of their experience:
“3+ have been big fans of Melanie’s work since her days of shooting for Domino magazine. We were excited to work with her for the first time, and she exceeded our expectations. The shoot was extremely creative and collaborative. Melanie completely understood and delivered the original, fun, fantasy vibe we were going for. And she was a real trooper, having fun even when we shot outside for hours on the hottest day of the summer! We can’t wait to work with Melanie again.” (Thanks for the kind words, 3+!)
