As noted in publications like The New York Times and New York, voguing—the style of dance celebrated in New York City’s 1980s ballroom scene, documented in Jenny Livingston‘s 1990 film Paris Is Burning, and elevated into the mainstream by Madonna‘s hit song “Vogue”—is being embraced by a new generation. Timothy Greenfield-Sanders recently photographed some of the vibrant personalities of the current scene for a fashion feature in the new issue of Paper magazine. Here’s a look at his portraits. Read about the performers at “New York City’s Ballroom Performers Turn It Out.” And to see a behind-the-scenes video of Timothy’s shoot, go here or scroll to the end of the post.
