“Automobiles have souls,” says Timothy White, who in addition to being a celebrity portrait photographer is an avid car and motorcycle collector. Timothy has created a series of auto portraits that communicate his passion for cars and hint at their inner life, and this body of personal work is now being recognized by the Fairfield County Concours d’Elegance, which has chosen him as its featured artist.
The two-day event, scheduled for September 12 and 13 at the Fairfield County Hunt Club in Connecticut, will consist of seminars, presentations, and art and “automobilia” exhibitions, such as a showcase of more than 200 automobiles and motorcycles spanning the past 100 years. Timothy’s photos will be on display both at the Concours d’Elegance and at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, Connecticut.

Timothy’s own auto and motorbike collection includes a 1969 Aston Martin DBS, 1977 Porsche Targa, 1939 Lincoln Zephyr, 1948 Ford Business Coupe, 1951 Cadillac convertible, and an Indian Larry custom-built chopper. (He paid tribute to his friend Indian Larry, a motorcycle builder who died in 2004, in his 2006 book Indian Larry.) A while back, Timothy did a video interview with Architectural Digest in which he talks about his longtime fascination with cars. “My interest is more emotional,” he says of his collection. “I’ve got a 1939 Lincoln Zephyr. To drive around New York City in it and pull up in front of a restaurant or bar and leave it at the curb and go in, it makes me feel like I’m Robert Mitchum in a black-and-white movie from the thirties.”
