….

Evey morning, I click through my bookmarked list of photo blogs and publications, with Rachel Hulin’s A Photography Blog being at the top of that list. Rachel, who is a photographer herself, has a great eye for talent and a smart, conversational style of writing. I’m rarely disappointed by A Photography Blog (except when there are no new posts, but, hey, we all get too busy to feed the blog beast at times).

Today, she’s posted an item inspired by the terrible fires in Los Angeles. Her cousin, who lives in L.A., sent her an alarming photo of the view from her home, and Rachel decided to do some photo research to see what fire-related images she could find. What she turned up was a photo essay that Vincent Laforet shot for National Geographic last year. It’s called “Drying of the West,” and Rachel has posted a bunch of Vincent’s images from the story—including some of his trademark aerials—along with the captions. It’s beautiful work: documentary photography as graphic design, in a way. You can see many more of Vincent’s images here and, while you’re at it, check out the rest of Rachel’s blog.
