As CNN notes in a story posted here, the winner of the prestigious Prix Pictet will be announced on October 22. This year’s theme is “Earth,” and a dozen photographers have been nominated, including Ed Kashi (for “Curse of the Black Gold: 50 Years of Oil in the Niger Delta”), Sammy Bajoli (who combines archival photos of Belgian-run mines in Congo with his own photos of the mines today), and Nadav Kander, who photographed the communities along China’s Yangtze River.

Last year’s winner was Benoit Aquin, who was honored for his series “The Chinese ‘Dust Bowl.’”
