T Magazine Blog interviews Roxanne Lowit

The buzz surrounding Roxanne Lowit and Backstage Dior continues to grow, grow, grow. The book, which I saw in person yesterday at Stockland Martel’s offices, is a hefty, eye-popping collection of otherworldly fashions and the equally out-of-this world women who modeled them.

Roxanne captures the glamour and the gorgeousness, and interprets it through the lens of celebration. Her photos are always uplifting, and you don’t have to be a fashion person to automatically connect with the joyfulness on display in her images. It’s there, you see and feel it, and you can’t help but smile.

Today’s New York Times T Magazine Blog features a Q&A by Sandra Ballentine with Roxanne that sheds light on the photographer, who in person is as subtle and soft-spoken as her images are fabulous and outré. An excerpt:

What’s the funniest thing you’ve witnessed backstage?
At a Gucci show the girls were in swimsuits. The hair stylist Orlando Pita was spraying them with a water bottle before they walked on to the runway. Tom Ford was standing by, watching. It was going a bit too slow for him so he snatched the bottle from Orlando’s hand and sprayed Kate Moss, soaking her. The water was cold so she was squirming and squealing.

There’s lots more. Read the Q&A here.
